“I’llgo deal with it,”Felixsaid. “Youstay relaxed.”

Felix’sbare feet padded away.Ina moment, louder clanks came from the kitchen, then running water.Mariposamade a pitiful sound.Icouldn’t make out whatFelixwas saying to her, but his tone was soothing.Ifucking loved him.

Ifyou want your voice heard, go to this website and sign up.Also, feel free to share with anyone you know who’s in the same situation. They’redoing the interviews viaZoomso people don’t have to be local.

 FELIX

 EPILOGUE

 JULY

Ipractically skipped to the car asIleft the apartment complex office after turning in my key.YesterdaySteveandCalhelped me move my bookcases and the remainder of the boxesIwas taking over toMalcolm’s—our—house.Thenmy furniture had gone to eitherSteveorCal’splaces or the thrift store.Malcolm’sfurniture was much newer, not to mention more comfortable, thoughIdidn’t say that toSteveandCal.

Malcolmhad acted a little put out he couldn’t help me, but the stairs made it so difficult for him it wasn’t worth it.I’dalso declined his offer to getFosterorGregand the others to help.Ididn’t havethatmuch stuff.

We’dusedSteve’spickup for the furniture, andMalcolmhad insistedIborrow theBuick, with its huge trunk, to move the boxes yesterday, and again today to transport the vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies.

SofarMalcolmhadn’t noticed the custom silver “Raquel” name plateI’dadded to theBuick’srear passenger-side quarter panel.I’dhad enthusiastic permission fromRodney, theBuick’sowner.UnlikeMalcolm,Rodneyhad been thrilled with all the attentionCole’sInstagrampost had drawn to the car.

ThismorningI’dspent a couple of hours doing a final cleaning of the apartment.Malcolm’sexpensive vacuum had sucked the glitter out of the carpet in seconds, soI’dprobably get my security deposit back.

AndnowIwas completely, officially moved in withMalcolm.

Itwas a typical swelteringJulyday, butIwas in such a good moodIput theBuick’stop down.AfterIput a towel between the dark brown leather seats and the exposed skin of my legs,IblastedTheGo-Go’son the radio and steered leisurely down the streets, enjoying the stares and waves of the peopleIpassed.

WhenIreached the house, a white van was parked along the curb behind my sedan.Thelogo on the side of the van saidBentOakRemodeling&Construction.

Hadsomething happened to the house?I’donly been gone a few hours.

Iparked theBuickunder the carport and was about to rush inside whenIheard voices from the backyard.

Iopened the gate.Malcolmwas standing next to a burly bald guy wearing a white t-shirt and white pants splashed with gray.Aslimmer man, dressed similarly but with a white ballcap, was smoothing wet concrete into a large square on the ground framed by wooden planks.
