“Takea look in the mirror. You’regoing to have a nasty bruise from where you fell.”

Really?Buthe was right.Whenthe bomb went offI’dfallen backwards, landing on my butt and shoulder.Iwas luckyI’dtucked my head and hadn’t hit it on the concrete or my car.Butmy shoulder—as well as my ass,Idiscovered whenIpeeked under my boxers—was starting to purple up.

Thatwas going to be a bitch to put ice on.

AsIfollowedFosterback outsideIrealized my whole body was getting stiff.Goingto the ranch was sounding better and better.Screwicing my back.Theguys had a hot tub.

Malcolmdid not have a spare cane.Fosterhanded off the crutches to him, andIwatched carefully asMalcolmstood up.Theparamedics were standing by their ambulance watching as well.Malcolmhad obviously turned down the opportunity to go to the hospital, but if he couldn’t walkIwas going to use whatever limited influenceIhad to make sure he went anyway.

Fosterseemed to be the only one not surprised whenMalcolmswung confidently on his crutches and headed for the house.

CHAPTER12

MALCOLM

MAY

Mariposawas not pleased to be put in her carrier. She’dbeen hiding under my bed, her go-to spot when things got noisy.WatchingFosterlie on the ground to pull her out gave me a good laugh, somethingIhadn’t had sinceI’dwoken up this morning.

Felix.Shit,Iwas not prepared to think aboutFelix.Ofcourse,Ishould’ve considered that beforeIslept with him.

AfterhandingFostereverythingI’dbeen wearing this morning,Igot redressed and stuffed a couple of changes of clothes and my pain meds into a backpack.FostergrabbedMariposa’sinsulin from the fridge and tucked it into the side pocket of her carrier before leading the way out of the house.Beingback on the crutches whenI’dgotten used to being more mobile with my cane was… upsetting.Ipushed the feeling aside, along with all the others.OnceIfigured out whereFelixandIwere going to stay tonightI’dfind a pharmacy and buy a new cane, so it wouldn’t matter.

Iwas relieved to seeBrianstanding at the edge of the area the cops had taped off.Hewas next toGregandCraig, who’d no doubt come to make sure the house was intact.ThoughwhenCraigsaw me he started waving and jumping up and down, his curly blond hair flapping in time to his hops.

“Malcolm!Oh, my god, are you okay!”Fuck, my hearing wasn’tthatbad anymore.

“I’mfine.Calmdown and stop shouting.”

Iwaved atFelixto come over asFostergot the officer in charge of the scene to letCraig,GregandBrianinside the tape.

Craigcame straight up to me.Ijerked back reflexively but he still threw his arms around my neck and shoulders. “Fuckinghell,Malcolm, try to pick someone safer to sleep with next time, will you?”

Gregsucked in a breath loud enough evenIcould hear it.Felixlooked like someone had punched him in the gut.Fuck.

“Craig.”Ibacked up so he’d be forced to unwind from his hug. “ThisisFelix.”Myarms were occupied with the crutches, soIcouldn’t reach out and put my hand onFelixlikeIwanted to, butIdid shuffle a couple of steps closer to him.

Craiggot the message. “Oh, shit.Sorry.”Herubbed his forehead. “Iwas just worried aboutMalcolm.”

Felixstraightened his spine.Iwas oddly proud of him. “Iget it, but for the record,Ididn’t ask for some dirtbag to put a bomb on my car.”

Craiggrimaced. “Sorry.I’lltry not to talk out of my ass in the future.”

Felixdidn’t laugh.Ieyed him carefully. He’dbeen crying earlier, and no wonder.
