FELIX
MAY
“Ihave a question,”Isaid toBrianand the others as soon asMalcolmhad crutched his way around the bend toward the guest cottage.
“Notsure if we can answer, but go ahead,”Jasonsaid.
“Washe grouchy before he got shot in the leg, or is it new?”
Theyall looked at each other and shrugged.Briansaid, “Youshould askFoster. They’vebeen friends for years.Noneof us knew him before he moved toBentOak.Hewas working for theFBIout ofSanAntoniowhen he went on that undercover op.Afterhe was injured he came toBentOakto recover sinceFosterlived here. That’swhen he quit theFBIandIhired him atSheltonSecurity.”Brianput his hand over his belly. “Itwas good timing.Malcolmhad to helpJasonrun things atSheltonSecurityfor a couple of months afterIgot shot.”
Inodded atBrian.I’dseen the scar on his abdomen earlier, andWillhad told meBrianhad been shot by the person who’d shot atWilland me when we’d been on our date lastNovember.Iwanted to askBrianif he was okay these days, butIcouldn’t figure out how to do so without coming across as nosy and rude.
Istood up. “Alright, thanks.I’dbetter go get a shower too.”
Coleheld up a hand. “Nope.Staywhere you are.Nowit’s time formyquestions.”
Well, crap.HowhadIforgotten?IwishedI’dleft withMalcolm.Ilowered myself back into the water.
Colesat forward eagerly.WillandJasongazed fondly at their boyfriend but didn’t try to stop him.Jerks.
“So,Felix, what’s going on with you andMalcolm?”
* * *
Briandrove us to the police station.Apparentlywe were getting the fullSheltonSecuritytreatment.Icouldn’t sayIminded.Knowingsomeone out there wanted to hurt me, or worse, was scary as heck.
Iclosed my eyes and tried to nap on the way into town, but my brain didn’t want to shut down.Iended up staring out the window, reliving everythingI’dhave to go over with the cops.
Iwas not in a good mood when we arrived at the police station, butIkept my mouth shut soMalcolmwouldn’t worry.
Brianescorted us inside the building, but he took off to go home once he’d handed us over to the detectives.Malcolmwent withDetectivesOchoaandCallahan, andIwas left withFosterandAmy.Iguessed it wouldn’t look good forFosterto interview his best friend.
Theytook me to an interview room, whichIwas pretty sure was the same oneI’dbeen in afterWillandIhad been shot at last year.God, it seemed so long ago now.Inever imagined anyone would try to kill me at all, much less two different people.
LuckilyIdidn’t have to write my statement out by hand like you see onTVsometimes, which would’ve taken forever.InsteadFosterandAmysaid they’d record my statement and take notes, then have me sign an official copy later.
Amyturned on the recording.Shesaid the date and who was present, along with her andFoster’sbadge numbers.
“Okay,Felix.Walkus through what happened this morning.”
SoIdid.Itold them exactly whatI’ddone and seen.Theydocumented what timeI’darrived atMalcolm’shouse last night and that neither of us had gone outside afterMalcolmhad let me in.
Fostersaid, “Yousay you thought the box on your car was a glitter bomb.Tellus why you thought so.”
