 CHAPTER24

 FELIX

 JUNE

Ifreaking loved living withMalcolm. It’dbeen two weeks since we’d left the ranch, andIhopedMalcolmnever figured outI’dalready mentally moved in.

First, there was the sex.Off-the-charts hot.LookingatMalcolmyou might think he was boring in bed, but let me tell you, the man had some moves.Wehad to make some accommodations for his leg, butIhad no complaints. He’doffered to let me top him, but he hadn’t done it in years soIwanted to wait for a night when we had plenty of time for foreplay.

Therewere also all the little ways he showed me how much he appreciated me.Likehe usually made me breakfast. He’dtext me during the day to let me know he was thinking about me and ask how my day was going.Ifelt cared for.

Andhe made an effort with my friends.LastnightSteveandCalhad come over, andMalcolmhad reviewed the financials for their business plan to make sure they’d done everything right.Theyhadn’t, of course, butMalcolmsat with them for over two hours and helped them figure it out.

Thiswas the relationshipI’dbeen searching for my whole adult life.ButIwas gladI’dwaited forMalcolm.

Itried to do my part too.Eventhough we weren’t being neat freaks anymore,Istill tried not to drop stuff on the floor soMalcolmcould get around easily with his cane.Imassaged his leg multiple times a week—which usually led to other stuff, so win-win.AndIdid my best to make him laugh or at least smile every day.Itwas becoming easier and easier, since most days allIhad to do was walk in the room and he’d light up likeIwas the best thing he’d seen in years.

I’dalso framed a selfieI’dtaken with the rosesMalcolmhad brought me on our first official date.Jasonhad promised to give it toBrianto sneak it ontoMalcolm’sdesk at work.

I’darrived home—andIwas calling ithome, even for the two-plus months remaining on my apartment lease—from my most successful day as a pet massage therapist yet.I’dhad three—count them, three—client appointments.OnaMonday!AndIhad three more scheduled for later this week.IfIcould turn these into regulars,Iwas on the cusp of being able to support myself without continuing to dip into my savings.

Tonightwas another game night atCraigandFoster’shouse.Iwas planning to wowMalcolmand his friends with my baking skills.NodoubtSilviawould make her usual feast, butIwanted to bring something as well.I’dstopped at the store to pick up the ingredients for my favorite strawberry swirl cupcakes.Theyweren’t hard to make but they looked like they took hours.

Inno timeIwas in a happy kitchen groove.KATE-FMwas blastingTearsforFearsfrom my phone, the first batch of cupcakes was cooling on the counter, andI’djust danced the second batch into the oven.

Duringa complicated spin-shuffle-slide in front of the fridge—whichItotally did not stumble into—the music briefly changed to my phone’s text chime.Idid a quick two-step over to the counter and checked my messages.
