I bit my lip to hold back a smile. Poor Marcus refused to accept the situationship Amelie has kept them in. He really thought he could wear her down. Maybe one day Amelie would see just how lucky she is.

“Miss Bensen.” Holloway’s voice snapped me back to reality. “Care to share what’s so entertaining? It certainly can’t be how strigoi would pose as cattle to drain poor farming families.”

Heat crept up my neck. “Just checking the time, Professor.”

“Fascinating. Perhaps you’d like to explain the difference between a strigoi mort and a strigoi viu to the class?”

The blank stare I gave him probably answered that question. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Lacey shrinking in her seat. It was times like these where her ‘I don’t give a damn’ attitude came in handy. But it was useless against the faculty, there wasn’t anything she could do to save me.

“See me after class.” He turned back to the board. “As I was saying...”

Great. Perfect. Just what I needed—another lecture about paying attention in lectures. At least I wasn’t due at Venom for a few hours. No scary woods shortcut needed today.

 My phone buzzed again.

I glanced up to make sure Holloway wasn’t watching before I typed back.

 Lilith

 Tom?

 Amelie

Yeah, sure. Cutie with the nice butt.

Before I could respond, Holloway cleared his throat. Loudly. I shoved my phone deep into my pocket, but not before catching Amelie’s last message.

 Amelie

 I passed it along.

The thought of potentially going on a date with Tom made my stomach churn. One mediocre date shouldn’t matter this much. But something about Beckett had felt different. Real.

I was just the only one who felt it.

 Chapter Ten

Like all great things, class had come to an end, and I dragged my feet to Holloway’s desk while the other students fled. I wanted to escape with them, but I had sealed my fate earlier. His green eyes blazed with frustration as he shuffled papers around.

“Miss Bensen, this is becoming a habit.”
