***Ellen***
One month later
“I’m so proud of you, babe.”
I tug on the sides of Jon’s white coat, smiling up into his handsome face. His practice is finally up and running, and his first patient—Raven—is on her way.
“Not as proud as I am of you. Ellen’s Events is a hit.”
His hand slips under my property cut, rubbing slow circles on my back. Beneath my shirt, our tat is sitting proudly on my upper back. It’s something Raven designed for us—intertwined E’s, one wearing a pair of black-rimmed glasses, the other a tiara. His covers most of his back—the area reserved for old ladies—and nowadays he’s shirtless more often than not. He wears our love so proudly, it only makes me fall deeper in love with him every day. My breasts have healed from the surgery with minimal scarring. I’ll need regular mammograms, but I pay much more attention to them now. So does Jon. I particularly like his brand of attention.
As his lips descend to mine, his receptionist’s voice comes over the intercom. “Mr. and Mrs. Hunter are here, sir.”
He moves away, pressing a button on his phone. “Send them in, Reva.”
I take a seat in the corner, only here because Raven requested my presence. My brother and sister-in-law walk into the office, huge smiles on their faces. Raven’s having her first ultrasound today.
Jon asks her a few questions, jots down notes in a folder, and then leads us to another room. He gets Raven set up on an ultrasound table, explaining the process to her. She jumps when he places the wand on her stomach.
“Ooh. Cold!”
Gage takes her hand, his gaze fixed on the screen. He and Raven have been through so much, it warms my heart to see them happy.
“Hear that?” Jon asks, pulling me back into the moment.
“Yeah,” Raven answers.
“That’s your baby’s heartbeat.”
Her face lights up and she shifts her gaze to stare up at Gage.
“Why does it sound like that?” Gage asks, brows furrowed.
Jon is studying the screen. “Like it’s beating double time?”
“Yeah.”
“Because it is.”
“What… is something wrong?” Horror crosses his features.
Jon chuckles, shaking his head. “No, brother. It’s double because there are two babies.” He wiggles two fingers at the soon-to-be parents. “Twins.”
“Holy shit!” Raven slaps her hand over her mouth.
Gage grins, his expression ecstatic. “Two? My boys can swim!” He grabs Raven’s face, planting a kiss on her lips. “Chopper’s gonna be over the moon.”
“Congrats, bro!”
Jon prints them out a picture, handing it to Gage. He and Raven stare down at it, their happiness worming its way into my body. I was going to wait to give Jon my news, but I think now’s a good time. Leaving my place in the corner, I hug them both.
“I’m so happy for you guys.”
“Yeah, remember that when we need a babysitter,” Raven jokes.
“Anytime. As long as you return the favor.” They stare at me in confusion. Taking a deep breath, I turn to Jon. “Do me next?”
He observes me, expression changing as he goes through the motions of trying to ascertain if I’m serious.
