“Don’t cry, beautiful.”
“I just… I just want to feel better.”
I lean closer, my breathing accelerating as he stares at my lips. Angling them toward him, I wait for him to take the final step. Instead, he pulls back, releasing me.
Turned down again. What was I thinking?
“I better go. I have an early morning.” He gives me another feeble smile and pushes to his feet.
I slide my palms down my cheeks, wiping away the moisture.
“I’ll walk you out,” I offer. “Thanks for coming with me.”
“No problem.”
At the door, he turns to me before walking out.
“I meant what I said. You call me if you need me.”
“Thanks.” I nod.
I watch him get on his bike and ride away before I close and lock the door. He’s a good friend. If I ever want more, I hope it will be with a man like him.
As the tears flow from my eyes once more, I slowly remove Eddie’s ring from my finger. I need to let someone in, and not just for the occasional booty call. Einstein… he’s a good place to start. I saw the look in his eyes. He wanted to kiss me, but he’s caught up in his good guy routine and won’t because he thinks he’s taking advantage of me.
Looking around the room, all the memories of Eddie flash through my mind.
I think it’s time to make some new ones.
CHAPTER 4
***Einstein***
After delivering Raven safely to the airport, Gage shakes my hand.
“Thanks, E.”
“Are you kidding me?” I chuckle. “This was the easy part.”
“Are you calling me easy, Dr. E?” Raven smiles, poking me in the shoulder. Gage throws his head back, laughing.
Taking her hand, I tug her into my arms and kiss her forehead. “The easy part is taking care of you, beautiful.”
“I know.” She smiles up at me.
“Okay, okay. That’s enough,” Gage grumbles. She giggles, moving back to stand next to him. “I’ll call you when we land.”
“Have fun, you two.”
“Thanks. You have the conn, brother.” He chuckles, extending his hand again. It’s been a while since he’s used aStar Trekreference. “Just make sure my club is still standing when I get back.”
“I’ll try my best,” I reply, clasping his hand.
“Let’s go, doll.”
“Bye, Dr. E!” Raven waves as they walk off.
I watch them disappear into the airport, then drive away. The plan went off without a hitch. By now, that woman and baby are close to landing in Seattle. We did our part, but nowJefe’swar begins.
