“Are you sure?”

“Of course. What else is an old man gonna do?”

“Okay. Call me if you need anything.”

I kiss my son’s cheek, warning him to be a good boy. Jon places his hand at the small of my back as we exit the clubhouse. There’s something different in the air between us. Before, it was all about getting him into bed, but this “thing” seems to be turning into something else entirely, and that’s what scares me more than anything else.

We don’t talk on the drive to my house. I get the feeling he’s giving me space to think about what he said. However, I wish he would say something; that way, I wouldn’t have to think about it.

Unlike the other nights, I don’t try to get him inside. I use the remote in the car to open the garage door for him to get his bike, then stop at the front step, turning to him.

“Thanks for today. Mikey and I had fun.”

“You’re welcome, beautiful.”

“Well… good night.”

I open the door, but his voice stops me before I can take another step.

“Take a ride with me.”

“Jon—”

“Please.”

Unable to ignore his plea, I drop my purse inside the house, then lock the door again. He takes my hand, quickly leading me to the garage.

“It looks like it’s going to rain,” I observe, looking up at the gray clouds in the sky.

“We won’t be long.”

He climbs onto his bike, handing me his helmet. I haven’t been on a bike since Eddie’s death. Not even my brother’s, or my dad’s. It just didn’t seem right. Jon notices my indecision and extends his hand. I stare at it, then the empty space behind him, before taking a leap of faith. I strap on the helmet, grab his hand, and climb on.

As I slide my arms around his waist, the bike roars to life. The vibrations travel up my thighs, settling in the pit of my stomach. When he sets off, I hold him tighter, sticking to his back. I close my eyes, giving in to the feeling of the wind on my face, the freedom that comes with the ride.

Before long, my mind is at peace, even if just for a moment. I raise my hands in the air, excitedly screaming over the roar of the engine. Lightning strikes in the distance, inducing marvel at its beauty against the backdrop of the otherwise dark sky. The smell of the impending rain tantalizes my senses.

“I’m gonna head back!” Jon shouts over his shoulder.

“Okay!”

I cling to him even tighter than before on the ride home. I never thought I’d be able to do this again. There are a lot of things this man is proving to me that I’m still capable of. I don’t know how I can ever repay him.

He drops me off at my front door with a soft kiss, still intent on giving me space. I watch him ride away before I make my way upstairs to the shower, my skin still tingling from the ride. Every area I touch is super sensitive. As the water beats on my hard nipples, it sends sensations straight to my clit. Closing my eyes, I see Jon’s face—his eyes, his lips. I hear his voice, whispering so softly in my ear. Sliding my hand between my thighs, I touch myself, remembering his hands on me last night.

Crap. Looks like it’ll be me and B.O.B again tonight.

I wrap up my shower, drying my hair and pulling on a T-shirt before climbing into bed. The rain has started. I hear the thunder, watch as the lightning illuminates the room, even through the drapes. As I’m about to reach into the drawer of my nightstand, a heavy pounding comes from downstairs. I hop out of bed, going to investigate. The sound echoes again, and I realize someone’s at the door. I hurry, wondering who would be out in this weather. Squinting, I check the peephole and see Jon on my doorstep, soaking wet. I throw the door open, waving him inside.

“What are you doing out there?” I demand.

He grabs both sides of the door frame, breathing heavily. My eyes meet his, forcing me to step back at the sheer hunger I see there. He steps inside, kicking the door closed behind him and locking it. In the next second, his hands are in my hair and his lips are on mine. He hasn’t kissed me like this before—like his next breath depends on it.

“I got halfway home,” he says between kisses, “and had to turn around. I need you, Ellen.”

So… this is it. I swallow hard, taking his hand.

“Let’s get you out of those wet clothes.”
