“That she is.”

“She’s a lifesaver, too. Thankfully, she was able to help me out with that party. I don’t think I would have been of any use to those kids.”

“Well, soon you can hire your own staff to help you. There’s no one around doing what you do, so I have no doubt you’ll be successful. Not to mention you’re damn good at it.”

“Thank you.”

Her head returns to its place on my chest, fingers resuming their game on my skin.

“Do you want kids?” she asks quietly.

“Of course. Always have. What about you? Do you want any more?”

I hold my breath, waiting for her answer.

“I do.” I release the breath I’m holding, while she sighs. “If I get through this.”

“You will.”

We settle once more into a comfortable silence, until my phone rings, shattering it. I pick it up, my pulse beginning to race when I see Darren’s name flashing on the screen.

Ellen’s brows furrow and she nervously chews on her lip.

“Not yet, but stop by around noon. We’ll talk more then.”

“Okay. Thanks, Darren.”

“No problem. You’re welcome.”

I hang up, taking her hand and pulling her back into my arms.

“What did he say?”

“Tomorrow, beautiful. We find out tomorrow.”

My arm tightens around her as she begins to tremble. I wish more than anything that I could take away her anxiety, her pain. Do more than just hold her. But at least we’re close.

We just have to wait until tomorrow.

Fibroadenoma.

When Darren says the word, I breathe a sigh of relief, expelling a breath I didn’t even know I was holding.

Looking between me and Darren, Ellen asks, “What does that mean?”
