I flop down on his chest in a heap, my cheek bouncing up and down when he chuckles.

“What’s so funny?” I slur.

“You said ‘shit.’ As a matter of fact, you’ve said ‘fuck’ a few times, too.”

“Oh. Yeah. Mind-blowing orgasms will do that to you.”

“I know what you mean.”

“Thank God Mikey’s not a light sleeper. Jee-sus. I don’t think I can move.”

This time he laughs, tugging the blanket over us, then wrapping me in his arms.

“Sleep, babe.”

Like I have the strength to do anything else.I reply with a grunt, falling into a deep slumber.

CHAPTER 17

***Einstein***

“You ready?”

“I just want to get this over with,” Ellen replies, giving my fingers a squeeze.

She’s lying in a hospital bed. In just a few minutes, they’re going to prep her for surgery. Instead of going back to Atlanta, I managed to convince Darren to perform the procedure at St. Johns. The administration was more than happy to accommodate him, even asking him to consult on a few cases.

Ellen’s family just left the room, giving us some time alone. The last two days have been quiet but tense. Fort Knox doesn’t have anything on the clubhouse now. I hate the waiting more than anything. If we knew who we’re dealing with, we’d be able to formulate a plan, other than trying to play defense. Gage is chomping at the bit to get at these idiots, and I don’t blame him. Now that I have Ellen and Mikey to think about, I’m right there with him.

“Just a little longer, beautiful.”

“I know. This lockdown isn’t helping.”

I’ve been on a blow-up mattress on the floor of my room at the clubhouse while Ellen and Mikey have been in my bed. If there’s anything the last couple of days have shown me, it’s that I want to wake up to them every day. I want to go to sleep at night with Ellen in my arms.

“When you get out of surgery, we need to talk about you moving in with me.”

I thought she’d be surprised, but instead, she surprises me by smiling.

“We can do that.”

“If you don’t want to move in to my place, we can get another house. I just think—”

“Jon, it’s okay. I couldn’t ask you to move into a house I intended to share with Eddie. It might take some adjusting for Mikey, but I love your place.”

I breathe a sigh of relief, kissing her knuckles. “We’ll talk to him when you get out of here… together.”

“He’ll be happy,” she assures me. “He looks up to you.”

“He’s a good kid. You’ve done an amazing job with him.”

“Thanks.”

Darren walks in, followed by two orderlies. I shake his hand, then listen as he walks Ellen through the procedure. She’s transferred to a gurney, and the orderlies wheel her out of the room. I walk next to it, her hand in mine. She’s been so strong, but now she’s clinging to my hand desperately, fear evident in her eyes.

“I’ll be right here when you get out.”

“Don’t worry, Jon. I’ll take good care of her,” Darren says.
