I turn to Ellen, releasing her hand reluctantly. I like how it felt in mine. A lot. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“And I’ll answer.” She bites into the corner of her lip.

I smile, nodding as I back away. The girls face each other, whispering and giggling. As I leave, I text the prospect, letting him know he should stay put for tonight, but then he’s officially off duty.

I have a date. With Ellen, of all women. Ellen, who I’ve known since we were kids. Ellen, my best friend’s sister.

Ellen.

The beautiful woman who just gave me the biggest boner I’ve had in years.

Fuck.

CHAPTER 5

***Ellen***

I take one last look at my reflection in the mirror, smooth the skirt of my black dress, push up my boobs, and then draw in a deep breath before I walk to the door. Nervously, I rub the locket on my necklace between my thumb and forefinger. The lone sapphire in the center grates against my thumb.Wish me luck, Mom.

It’s still a little unbelievable that I’m going on a date with Einstein. I’ve known the man all my life and never looked at him twice, until a few weeks ago. The same is true for him. Can this even work, or are we just kidding ourselves?

The other night when he had me against the car? Let’s just say I wouldn’t have objected to him taking me right then and there. I know he felt it, too. I noticed him getting hard right before he pulled away. Janet seems to think she saw sparks between us. Is this attraction real or just the hope of two lonely people? Whatever it is, I guess we’re about to find out.

When I open the door, his hand is raised, about to knock again. He drops it, his gaze roaming my body from head to toe and back again. Mine, however, is focused on his face—his expression. I didn’t squeeze myself into this dress to look “nice.” I wanted to wow him, and it seems I have.

“Hi.”

“Ellen, you look….” He shakes his head slowly, awe in his eyes. “Youaregorgeous.”

I blush, giving the floor my undivided attention. That response was way more than I expected, but I’ll definitely take it.

“Thank you.”

“These are for you.”

Looking back to him, I realize he’s holding a bunch of roses—red ones, for love and passion. The way he looks tonight, he could definitely ignite some passion. He transitions so seamlessly between biker and doctor. There are no cuts or leather in sight, replaced by a navy blue suit and a crisp white shirt, no tie. The top two buttons of his shirt are undone, giving me a peek at his chest.

“They’re beautiful. I’ll just put them in some water, and then we can go.”

He nods, stepping inside and closing the door as I head to the kitchen. I quickly find a vase, setting up my roses in the center of the kitchen island. I take a deep whiff of one, smiling like a giddy schoolgirl as I make my way back to him.

“Ready?” he asks.

“I am,” I answer, staring into his eyes.

After one last look backward, I take my first step toward my future. I don’t know where this thing with Einstein will go, but it’s time for me to move on.

“New car?” I ask, admiring the white Audi A6 sitting in my driveway.

“Yeah. Only had it a couple weeks. Figured it was time for an upgrade.”

“I can’t believe you gave up the Mustang,” I remark, remembering when he and Gage bought those cars.

“Oh, I still have it. I just think it’s more of an ‘Einstein’ car. This one says ‘Dr. Emerson.’”

“Gotcha.” We start walking toward it, and I notice the vanity license plate—E MC2. Smiling, I point to it. “Still says ‘Einstein,’ too.”

He chuckles, opening the passenger door so I can get in.
