He’s already pulling away, and I know it’s because he’s about to give me his jacket.

“No. Just… don’t move. I like this.”

“You got it, beautiful.”

I rest my head against his, covering his hands with mine. Staring down at the water, I listen to it make its way around the property, watching the stars glistening on the surface. All the while, I’m conscious of his warmth at my back. Paired with the weight of his head on my shoulder, it makes me feel… not alone. For the first time in what seems like forever, I feel my loneliness slowly slipping away.

I don’t know how long we stood there, but he’s the one who moves first.

“Let’s get you home.”

Reluctantly, I let him lead me to the car. Inside, he takes my hand, holding it all the way back to my house. Contentment flows through my body as I stare out my window, watching the moon as it seems to be leading us home. Too soon, he pulls into my driveway. I wait for him to open my door, then take his hand when he offers it.

“Always such a gentleman.”

“Because I’m in the presence of a lady.” With a smile, he kisses the back of my hand.

Pulling the corner of my bottom lip between my teeth, I curl my fingers around his, leading him to the door. Without giving him an option, or the chance to decline, I open it and step inside, leaving it open for him to follow. A triumphant smile spreads across my face when the door clicks closed and footsteps sound behind me. The battle’s nowhere near won, but there’s a flicker of hope.

“Beer?” I ask.

“Sure.”

I lay my purse on the kitchen island and open the fridge, grabbing a beer for him and a bottle of water for me. When I close the door, he’s leaning on the counter, watching me. I hand him the bottle, nervously searching the drawer for the opener. He reaches in, picking the thing up from the very front of the drawer.Damn it. Why is he making me so nervous?I move to the island, leaning on it as I stand across from him.

“Did you have fun tonight?” he asks as he pops the cap off the bottle.

“Yes. Did you?”

“I did. Then again, I expected to. We don’t have that ‘getting to know each other’ hurdle to jump over.”

“True.”

“The more pertinent question is….” He slowly makes his way toward me. I set my water bottle on the counter behind me, licking my lips. “Would you do it again?”

He places his beer next to my water, then grips the edge of the island, hands on either side of me, blocking me in. I nod, swallowing as his eyes roam my face. Reaching up, I slowly remove his glasses. He blinks rapidly, closing his eyes for a few seconds before opening them again.

“Are you blind without them?”

“No. They’re just for distances. I can see you perfectly, beautiful.”

“Good. Now, are you just going to look?”

With a smirk, he leans closer. My lips part, giving freedom to the breaths that are coming way too quickly. He straightens, his hands cradling my face before sliding into my hair, gently gripping my head. I place my hand on his arm, anticipating the first touch of his lips. It’s been so long since I did this, I wonder if I even remember how. Closing my eyes, I let him come to me. It seems like forever before our lips connect. He’s tentative, gently brushing his against mine. Maybe I’m broken, maybe we were fooling ourselves and there’s nothing between us, but the explosions I was expecting are missing.

Crap.

My lids flutter open as he pulls away.

“Is that okay?” he asks.

I nod, not wanting to hurt his feelings.

“Good. Now let’s try for something better than okay.”

He catches me off guard, pulling my lips to his. This time, when he kisses me, there is no gentleness, no soft brushing. He sucks on my bottom lip, nipping on it before moving to the top. A shiver runs down my spine, and I moan, leaning in to him. My hand slips from his arm, and I grasp his waist with both, tugging him toward me. When his tongue slides into my mouth, that first figurative bomb goes off in my head. One of his hands moves down to clasp the back of my neck, the other grabbing my hip, molding my body to his. Another explosion sets off in the pit of my stomach when I feel him hardening against me. A sensation runs south, crackling like a lit fuse all the way to my lady bits. Then my muscles clench. Holy hell, are they clenching!

Looks like I was wrong. I’m not broken, and there is definitely something here.
