I pull into her driveway at the same time Jeff is about to climb into his truck. I help Emily out of the Jeep, approaching the older man as she jogs inside.

“Just give me a few minutes to change real quick, Uncle Jeff!” she throws over her shoulder.

“Morning, Jeff.” I shake his hand. “How’s it going?”

“Morning, son. I was going to ask you the same question.” He jerks his head toward the house.

“Good. Emily’s an amazing woman.”

“I know. She needs a strong man right now. A man who will be sensitive to her needs… won’t take her for granted.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of her.”

“I’m sure you will. Thank you for what you did with the divorce papers.”

“My pleasure. After some of the things Emily told me, it was hard not fucking him up, maybe breaking a few bones. Or all of them.”

Jeff chuckles, combing his fingers through his white hair. “Wouldn’t have bothered me none.”

“Glad to hear that.”

I wanted to do a lot more than that, but I highly doubt Em’s uncle would condone murder.

We stand around for a bit discussing his tax returns before Emily comes rushing out of the house, halting our conversation.

“I’m ready!”

“See you around, Venom.” Jeff shakes my hand again, folding his slender frame into the truck.

I kiss Emily’s forehead, then open the truck door for her. “See you later, Em.”

“Yeah… later.”

She gives me a sunny smile that will be haunting my thoughts for the rest of the day. “Later” can’t come soon enough.

I dig my phone out of my pocket, calling Kurt as I hop into the Jeep.

“Morning, boss.”

“Hey, Kurt. How’s it going?”

“Good. What’s up?”

“I need you to fit Emily into one of the trainers’ schedules today. Just a prelim session.”

“Sure. I’ll see who has an opening.”

“Check with Rianne. I think Emily would be more comfortable with a woman.”

“Got it.”

“Thanks, Kurt.”

“No problem. Stepping up your game there?”

“A little,” I answer. Kurt’s my employee, and although we’re friendly, we’re not friends. We don’t talk about my personal life. I guess he wants to see what his chances are. Hedidhit on Emily before. “I’ll see you later, Kurt.”

“Yes, Mr. Hughes.”
