Chapter Eight
Enhancement
Class was still in session when we were done, but in an unspoken arrangement, Bianca and I were ready to leave.
There were more important things than biology labs.
Although, why Cory Moore was following us still, I had no idea. I tried to ignore him, and mostly succeeded, until we reached the front sidewalk. “Get back to class,” I finally hissed at him. “There’s no reason for you to leave too.”
Cory glowered at me.
“Actually.” Bianca turned to me, and she twisted her hands together. From the way she refused to meet my eyes and the tightness of her shoulders, I already knew I’d probably dislike whatever she would say next.
The air seemed to grow colder as she asked, “Can you give us a minute?”
Us…
A minute?
The two of them.
I looked at Cory, but the wolf appeared to be similarly surprised.
“Can I talk to you?” She then looked at him, and my stomach sank. “Real quick before you leave?”
I didn’t understand why he was leaving! School was still in session!
Who gavehimspecial privileges?
Cory blinked, surprised, before he lowered his hands from the back of his neck to his side.
“Sure?” His statement was more of a question, and he glanced at me—almost as if he were asking my permission.
I glared at him, daring him to allow this thing to happen.
“Okay…” Bianca said softly, stepping past me, and she walked away, heading toward the fountain. “It won’t take long.” She turned to face us and locking her arms behind her back. Her hair fell around her face, and it was at that exact moment a sunbeam haloed her head. My breath caught at the sudden ethereal vision.
Cory breathed in, similarity affected, and I wanted nothing more at this moment than to rip out his eyes. “See you tomorrow, Abernathy.”
My hands tightened into fists as he smoothly strolled after Bianca, and the two of them spoke briefly, talking so low that I couldn’t hear, and with a last lingering glance to me, Bianca led Cory to the parking lot.
Why did they have to go so far away?
This was not safe at all. There was still the matter of his unstable moods. And what if he’d been pretending to be upset about Adrian—could this be a plot to get me to relax my guard?
I had to follow them.
There were thick pine trees lining the back part of the parking lot where Cory usually parked his car. And despite being in shape and running every morning, I was still breathless by the time I took a roundabout path to the other side of the trees. The wind was blowing against me, so hopefully, Cory would not pick up on my scent.
The prickling needles brushed against my cheek as I crouched behind a pine tree.
“Cory, I’m worried about you.” Bianca sounded genuinely concerned because, even though I never would have imagined this scenario in a million years, shewas. She stepped closer to him, hands nervously twisting in front of her, and her eyes shone with a sincerity that made my breath catch.
She was much too close. What if he hurt her? Adrian had already done enough damage.
‘That’s not your biggest concern.’ Kiania’s voice rang through my thoughts. ‘You’re worried she likes him.’
I couldn’t deny it. But even this setting—it was almost exactly like one of those movies Bianca liked to watch. She denied being a fan, but, secretly, she adored cheesy romances.
