How was a fightmagical?

Behind her quiet and shy demeanor, she really was scary.

“Well…” I had no idea how to respond to this. Any other girl would probablynotwant to see bloodshed at prom. “Okay, then, I guess.”

Did she want me to fight someone?

I would.

“Hey, Finn.” She lowered her chin and looked up at me, and my throat tightened at the increasingly familiar look in her eyes. “We’re friends, right?”

What kind of stupid question was that? I pushed my fingers under my legs as a sense that we were entering a dangerous territory came over me.

However, it was innocent enough, and at least it was something I could answer. “Right.”

“What do you think is going to happen after next year?” Bianca asked, and the tense knot in my stomach grew. “Will we always be friends? I don’t even know where I want to go to school…” She hugged her knees to her chest, making her seem so much smaller.

I stared at her. Had she even been looking at colleges? I hadn’t seen any indication in her search history.

“I’m scared to be alone again.” Her voice was so low I almost missed it. But I didn’t, and a surge of protectiveness moved in me.

“What are you so worried about?” There was absolutely no need for her to stress over this. “We’re going to the same school.”

She glanced at me, her breath light. “What?”

“Where else would you go?” I wouldn’t have her be unsure about this. Even if nothing else worked out, no matter what, “We’ll always be together.”

It wasn’t a lie. Although we would never be in a relationship the way I wanted, I would stay close to her as an officer.

Even when the time would come that she hated me. I’d just have to trust that I’d done the right thing.
