I opened up a video chat with Sorrel and pressed the connect button.
My face reddened as I realized that he'd see me like this. I contemplated ending the video chat before it had even begun, but he accepted it at that precise moment, his eyes going wide as he took in my face, red from crying, and my head… completely bald.
"Oh my gods…Zelle… what happened?"
"I need…" I mumbled, trying hard not to burst into tears again. "I need to get out."
He nodded. "Baby, I will be there as soon as I can."
The video chat ended after that. I wasn't even sure if I had ended it or if he had. All that mattered was that he would be here with me in a few minutes.
My whole body shook as I reached up once more to feel my head.
I couldn't worry about this now. My hair was gone. It was gone. I could fall apart later. Right now, I had to get up. I had to stand up and I had to figure out a way to get myself out of this tower.
And in order to do that, I had to unlock the door.
Pushing myself up to a standing position, I took a few steps on wobbly legs. I sniffed hard, blinking back the tears as I went in search of a sewing needle to prick my finger so I could let Sorrel in when he got here.
