I finally tugged it out from under whatever was pinning it down, only to stumble away from the car in surprise as it began to immediately wind itself around my hands.

Panic washed over me like a bucket of ice water. I watched in horror as the braid wrapped itself more tightly around my hands.

The more I struggled, the worse it became, my hands tingling as circulation was cut off. My heart beat rapidly in my chest as I stumbled back from the car, hands outstretched in front of me.

"Stupid elf…" sneered a sharp voice from behind me. "Try to steal something from me? I'm the master thief, lightfoot."

It was then that I realized just how much I'd underestimated that little old sorceress. In addition to tightening around my wrists, the bonds made from Zelle's hair were starting to sting. To smart. I watched in horror as Zelle's beautifully soft hair transformed before my eyes.

Thorns.

She'd turned it into thorns.

The sharp thorns punctured my skin, and I grunted out in pain before turning to run from the garage, fully expecting the witch to follow. Drops of blood dripped onto the concrete as I ran.

The old witch was cackling, but she wasn't following me. I wasn't sure if that was a good sign or a bad sign. I tried to ignore the pain and turned, running from the scene.

Even if Zelle's braid had turned into thorns, I still had a few strands in my pocket. Strands that hadn't wrapped themselves around my dick or turned into barbs of pain as far as I could tell. So we were still in this game.

"Seeyou later," the witch called, still laughing as I ran from the parking garage.

It wasn't long before I figured out just why she was laughing. Why she'd made that horrible pun.

Seriously, it was bad. Old people shouldn't be allowed to make jokes like that.

I kept blinking my eyes, but I couldn't seem to clear them. It kept getting worse. Foggier.

I couldn't reach into my pocket for my phone. In short, I was fucked.

Gulping, I looked around, looking for something. ANYTHING that would help me get these thorns off my wrists.

Finding nothing and with my vision getting even worse, I placed my hands on the ground and stepped on my thorny bonds with one foot, succeeding in getting one hand free before wrenching the other as well.

The thorns burst into flames, burning up before my eyes. My very cloudy, very impaired eyes.

I grabbed my phone, fingers slipping on the screen as I called Kinden.

I figured if nothing else, he could help me get somewhere safe.

Seriously, fuck this old woman and her dark magic.

Fuck her and the broom she rode in on.

The phone rang and he picked up on the second one. "Did you get it?"

"Yeah. I need help though. I'm injured."

"We'll be there soon," he promised, his voice raising a bit. He was shit at hiding his feelings.

I walked as far as I could before catching my foot in a gutter and falling forward on my hands. As the shadows overtook my vision, I closed my eyes and waited.

Every car that approached got my heart thumping again. I was worried both that I hadn't gotten far enough away and that the witch was going to come back and finish the job or that someone else would find me. Someone who wasn't Kinden.

Another part of me knew that she wasn't coming back and this was just how she did things. She mauled you. Or crippled you. Or broke your spirit and that was enough.

We had to get Zelle out of that place. We just had to.

A car approached and slowed down. I opened my eyes to nothing, swallowing thickly.
