She sighed in exasperation and honestly, I was just done. “So go, then,” she said.
“I will,” I replied. “I’ll come by and talk to ya tomorrow, Momma.”
I could practically hear her rolling her eyes as I left, but I truly didn’t care. She never seemed to see the merit in me running home to Brody. Why it never occurred to her that he might be worried about me, or something like that, I had no clue. I shot off a quick text to him as I left the shop, the doors jingling in my wake as I started to make my way home in the cold.
Sometimes, if he didn’t have work the next day, he’d be waiting for me out here to walk with me. Or on the really cold nights, he’d have the car running and warm for when my meeting ended. But I knew he wasn’t really feeling well, if his earlier behavior at the bar was any indication, so I wasn’t expecting to see him outside.
“Hey there, sugar,” His deep voice sounded from the wall where he was leaning on the opposite side of the street.
I grinned widely, crossing the empty street and wrapping my arms around him. “Hey yourself, Wolf-man.”
He snickered. “You gave your Momma my regards, I hope?”
I rolled my eyes. “Even if I had, she wouldn’t have taken them.”
Chuckling again, he slipped his arm around my waist. “You have a nice meeting?”
I nodded. “It was great. Relaxing. Lovely. You seem like you’re feeling better.”
“Oh yeah, I definitely am,” he assured me. “Feeling fine as frogs’ hairs, Lily.”
I rolled my eyes at the turn of phrase. “Frogs don’t have hairs, Brody.”
“Figure of speech. If they did, they’d be so fine you couldn’t see them.”
I pulled him down for a kiss, expecting to peck his lips and be on our way, but he stopped walking in the middle of the sidewalk, his arm tightening around my waist. He hauled me closer, his breath hot as it ghosted across my face as he deepened the kiss. “Missed you today, Lil.”
“Me too,” I whispered, my hand moving up his chest to grip his t-shirt.
His tongue swiped out, teeth nipping at my bottom lip.
My belly swooped as I clung to him, breathing harder and faster as he repeated the action. “I can’t wait to get you home…”
“We’d better actually walk then,” I replied. “Or we won’t ever get there.”
He smirked, loosening his hold as he started walking again.
Walking while aroused was easier said than done. Every flat surface looked like a good place to get down to business, but we weren’t in the habit of getting arrested for public indecency, so home it was.
Luckily, it was close by. About a five minute walk from Momma’s shop.
I could have cheated, I supposed. I could have speed things up a bit and brought myself right to our doorstep. But my nerves were singing, crying out for Brody’s touch. I might slip and go too far. And I didn’t want to jump super far ahead in my timeline, thanks. There were things I didn’t want to miss.
Every moment with Brody accounted for most of those things.
And correcting a too-big time jump just seemed like it’d put a damper on the mood.
We practically ran the last few yards to our door, the bricks underfoot were hard and unforgiving against the soles of my feet. It might be time to buy a new pair of work shoes, if bricks were causing the tiny shocks of pain to run up my shins.
We reached the door, and Brody leaned down to nuzzle my neck, growling softly as I struggled to pull my keys out of my pocket and push it into the lock.
The door opened to the staircase and Brody pushed it closed behind us, bending slightly at the knees and scooping me up over one shoulder as he made his way up the stairs.
* * *
His hand clappeddown on my ass as we reached the top of the stairs. He pushed open our front door and walked inside.
The sensation of the slap ran through my body and I was unable to suppress the tiny yelp I made as he closed that door behind us and carried me off to the bedroom. His hand came down once more before he reached the bed, making me whimper.
