“Okay, class. Put the study guides away. It’s the moment of truth.” He passes out papers and takes a moment to stare at Nic before his face pales slightly, but he recovers quickly.
What the hell is that about? Seriously, what have I gotten myself into?
The second my test is laid out in front of me, I black everything out as my pencil moves over the paper. I cannot afford to fail here. I give the test my all, just like I always do. When I’m done, I flip my paper over and sit quietly as the others finish theirs as well. When everyone’s pencils are down, the professor walks around to collect our tests.
He looks around the room. “I’ll have these graded and posted by the end of the week. You’re all free to leave.”
It’s like he’s said the magic words, because everyone rushes to gather their things and make a mass exodus. I take my time before slinging my bag over my shoulder. I’d completely forgotten there was something I had to do today. “Hey, Peterson. What’s the verdict on our date?”
I sigh internally. Getting fucked and free dinner sounds perfect after the weekend I’ve had, but I’m currently a little indisposed. I can’t really tell Duncan that I need to take a rain check because I’ve been kidnapped.
He can tell by the look on my face what I’m going to say. “Awe, come on, Harper. We’ll have a good time.”
I give him a small shake of my head. “I’m sorry. I just really can’t do dinner anytime soon.”
“What’s your excuse this time?” he asks with a grin. “Washing your hair? Gotta break some other poor soul’s heart?” He places his palm over his chest like he’s been wounded.
I actually laugh at his joke, but before I can answer, there’s an arm wrapping around my shoulders and pulling me into a firm chest. “She’s actually got plans with me. Her boyfriend.”
My mouth gapes open at the same time all the humor leeches from Duncan’s face. He actually looks crushed. I’ve never seen the football player with anything less than a cocksure grin onhis face. “Oh, I didn’t realize.” He’s quick to recover, though his smile doesn’t reach his eyes. “Sorry for bothering you.”
He turns and walks out of the room. I turn a glare on Nic. He’s too busy glaring at the doorway to notice at first. When his eyes meet mine, his brows rise. “What?”
I shake my head at him and storm away. Fury burns deep in my belly. I’m so mad I just storm back to the car not even considering running away. I slam the door when I get in. When Nic gets into the driver’s side, I turn toward the window when he tries to talk to me again. I just stew in my anger as we drive back to my prison.

I’ve pissed Harper off. She wasn’t even this mad when we kidnapped her. I’m not sure if it was my interference in general that pissed her off or that I claimed to be her boyfriend. I just reacted when that guy started flirting with her. When she smiled at him, I just lost it. That burning feeling in the bottom of my stomach just erupted.
When I park in front of the house, I have to jump out of the car and race after her. By the time I catch up to her, she’s already made it inside and up a couple steps. I grab her wrist to stop her. “Wait. Harper, I’m sorry.”
Slowly, she turns to glare down at me. “For what?”
I blink. “I should have let you handle that on your own. I wasn’t trying to upset you.”
She tugs her wrist out of my grasp. “Yes, you should have. Now he thinks I’m a bitch for leading him on, and now he’s never going to ask me out again!”
I frown, not liking the thought of her going out with that guy. “I didn’t realize you liked him. I’m sorry.”
She frowns, confused at that. “I don’t like him.”
Okay, this girl is giving me whiplash at this point. “Then why are you mad he won’t ask you out again?”
She rolls her eyes. “I was planning to have sex with him and get a nice free dinner out of it for my trouble. Now that possibility has just flown out the window. Maybe if I tell him you were lying, it’ll be okay.”
A pang shoots through my chest. “I’ll buy you fucking dinner if that’s the problem. You’re not going out with that guy.”
Her brows raise, and a pink tint covers her cheeks. “Who do you think you are to tell me I can’t go out with him? It’s not about the damn dinner!”
Then, if it’s not about the dinner, what is the problem? It takes me a moment to realize that it’s about the sex. She’s mad that she can’t sleep with that douchey kid. My fists clench at my side as I think about her wanting him like that. Imagining her in his arms, naked with him over her and inside of her, makes me crazy.
I lose my shit. Before I even realize what I’m doing, I’ve got one hand buried in the hair at the back of her head, holding onto the strands tightly with my lips pressed against hers. She startles at first, but then she’s kissing me back. Right when she really gets into it, I bite her bottom lip and pull away.
She’s breathing heavily as I seethe. “Then you can fuck me. My brother put me in charge of all your needs, after all. Why shouldn’t I be the one to take care of this one too?”
I’m not sure if I was trying to justify it to her or myself, but either way, it works. Her eyes are hooded, and she grabs the hem of her shirt to lift it but pauses. “Wait, what about Ava? Don’t you need to go get her?”
I shake my head. “She’s at her mom’s house this week.”
