“Yes, I can. It happened so quickly but that man tried to rob us. We were here to see our friend,” Katie explains.

“Let’s get him on a gurney and into the hospital as fast as we can!” The nurse jumps up and starts working on getting the gurney into the parking garage.

Once Mason is loaded onto the gurney, the police come running into the garage.

“Ma’am, can you tell me what happened?” The officer questions. He’s staring at me as if he knows me and he should know me. He is the one who signed my death certificate for me.

His eyes widen as he looks at the scene. I raise an eyebrow to let him know I won’t say anything as long as he doesn’t say anything.

“That man,” I point to Raul, “tried to rob us and shot my husband,” I explain again. “I shot him out of self-defense.”

“Okay. Do you recall the same story?” The officer asks Katie and Ralf who agree with me.

“Don’t leave town,” he throws over his shoulder as he starts to load Raul’s dead body up on a gurney to get him out of here.

“If you don’t mind, I would like to be with my husband.”

I don’t know why I’m so excited to use those words, but it feels good. It feels normal and natural to call Mason my husband.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Mason

The constant beeping and someone yelling at another person is what lulls me out of my sleep.

“I want to know why my husband is not waking up!” Lucian’s voice cuts through my ears and wakes me up immediately.

Husband? We’re married?

“You’re awake!” She squeaks and covers my face with her lips as she kisses every inch of my face.

I place my hands on her shoulders to push her back to ask where I am. My hands feel heavy as I try to move them. Lucian must have sensed that since she pushes my hands away and kisses me swiftly on the mouth.

“I thought you died. Do you remember anything?” The way she asks me tells me I’m not supposed to say anything.

“I don’t know what happened,baby,” I murmur.

A nurse in the background nods and runs out of the room.

“We have two minutes to talk before the doctor comes. You were shot by a random man who tried to rob us. You don’t remember anything more than that, okay?”

I nod and immediately wince. The sudden movement of my head makes my stomach revolt and I feel myself start to dry heave.

“How long have I been here?” I ask her.

Lucian’s hair is in a rat’s nest on top of her head. She looks younger, scared and vulnerable. Her face is full of worry and something I have never seen before.

Love?

Does Lucian love me?

“You’ve been here for a couple of days. I’m so sorry. I’m so fucking sorry,” she whispers.

“Why are you here?” I demand and start to get worried that everyone will know she’s still alive. “What happened to Raul?”

She smirks. “He’s gone. The whole gang came to see you and they are worried about you. I’m so fucking sorry,” she whispers the last part solemnly.

“Stop. Just stop,” I murmur.
