The man is wearing a black hoody with a lot of facial hair on his face. He is looking every bit scary to me at the moment. I’m petrified!
Should I call the cops? Would that spook him and make him attack me? A lot could happen in a short amount of time. The police won’t be here to protect me.
My heart is beating faster and faster in my chest. I feel my breathing spike. Shit! I don’t want to get shot in front of my daughter. This is not the way I want to go!
He takes a picture of me and he smiles at me. I can see his fingers flying over the keyboard of his phone as he sends the picture to whomever sent him.
I bet it was Savros. He wants me dead and he will stop at nothing until I’m dead.
In this moment, I know I can’t work at the diner anymore. If this man is going to come to my house and clock me and my kid, he is definitely here because someone sent him.
My heart hammers in my chest. We are having a stand off in our cars in the middle of the day.
He winks at me and then pulls away. I try to take a picture of his license plate but he’s too fast for me.
Jesus! Is this how it ends for me? Is this how it ends and my daughter is going to watch me die?
Shit.
My breathing is still spiked but I call the diner anyways. I don’t want to leave Kaylie high and dry. This is the least I could do.
“Diner!” Some girl answers the phone.
“Hi, may I speak to Kaylie, please?”
“Yeah!” There is the sound of putting the phone down and then a shuffle of someone grabbing the phone.
“This is Kaylie,” Kaylie answers.
“Hi, Kaylie. This is Maci. I’m really sorry but I can’t come into work today.”
I don’t want to give her all of the juicy details. I don’t want her to know all about my life story and how the hitman was at my house tonight!
“If you’re not here for your shift, I have to fire you,” she retorts.
I shrug. “I guess then I’m fired. I’m really sorry.”
She hangs up the phone and I quickly grab my purse to get inside.
I have my taser ready to go and make the run to the door. Once my hand reaches the door, I call Howie.
“What’s going on?” He answers.
“I’m pretty sure I got made. I need the security upped at my apartment or I need to be moved. Now!”
I close the door into my apartment and quickly lock everything.
“What happened?”
I fill him but I don’t give him all of the details just yet. I know Riley is listening and I don’t need to scare her anymore than she already is.
“And you’re sure he took a picture of you?”
“Yes! He took a picture of me and smiled. He knows who I am! How much is my head worth?”
He gasps. “I’m gonna have to call you back.” He hangs up on me before I can even respond.
Shit. Things are about to get worse around here.
That’s when I remember, I don’t have Hawk’s phone number. I don’t even know his real name. I don’t want to leave in the middle of the night, but my safety is on the line and more importantly, so is my daughter’s.
I lock every bolt on the door and start walking around the apartment to make sure all of the windows are still locked, too. I know they are locked because I checked them earlier. I check them all the time to make sure.
My body is tense and I have too much adrenaline going through me to function. All I have to do now is wait for Howie to call me back.
Shit.
