Epilogue
Maci
Every day, it gets a little easier.
Every day, I feel like I’m becoming myself again and I love it.
That was until I’m talking to Howie and he tells me what’s going on in Chicago.
“Maci, we discussed some stuff with the Marshalls.”
“And?” I ask him while sitting on Hawk’s lap on the couch.
Hawk kisses my forehead and I lean against his chest.
Riley and I have been living here for the past month since I got out of the hospital. Every day, I find it harder and harder to not tell Hawk that I love him.
“This isn’t easy to say over the phone but we have some news for you. Savros was killed in prison last night.”
My back straightens. “How? What happened?”
Howie whistles in the back of his throat. “No one knows what happened. All of a sudden, the guards walked around to do a wellness check and he was dead. He was stabbed six times in the chest.”
Hawk is listening to the conversation with a proud look on his face. He must have had something to do with it! I can’t believe it!
Hawk looks at me and he’s daring me to say something to him. I know what he must have done. Damn it!
“Holy hell. What does that mean for me?” I blurt out.
Howie answers me quickly. “There is going to be retaliation. It is best you stay gone.”
My heart hammers in my chest. “What about my career?” I can’t give up everything I worked so hard for because of this asshole. Plus, he’s dead!
In the back of my mind, I know that even though he is dead, someone will try and avenge him.
Hawk kisses my forehead and holds me tighter against him. “Don’t worry, baby. You know I got you.”
