Maci

Never in my life have I had a head ache that hurts as bad as the one I have right now.

My head throbs something terrible and my throat feels as if it’s clogged up with cotton. No matter what, I can’t swallow enough spit to clear the cotton in my mouth.

Something beeps in the surrounding of the room and I hear the shuffle of feet over the floor.

“It should be any time, Evan. Your wife should be waking up at any time,” a woman says kindly.

I hear the rough voice of my lover in the background. “How much longer? Our daughter needs her mom.”

Our daughter?

Wife?

Am I in the twilight zone?

My head spins around and around as I try to get my wits about me. When did I get married and when did Hawk and I have a baby together?

My eyes flicker and I try to keep them open long enough to get a good view on the room. I know I’m in a hospital room because of the sterility smell of the hospital.

“Maci, baby! You’re awake!” Hawk almost shouts and his lips are covering my face.

I don’t move. I can’t move. I feel rooted to this bed and no matter how much I try to move, I just can’t. Am I chained to the bed? What is happening to me?

I open my mouth to say something but nothing comes out. What is happening!

“It’s nice of you to come back to us,” a woman with red hair says to me kindly. “Your husband has been missing you greatly! Let me get your doctor.”

I don’t say anything. I can’t. I’m more confused now than anything else. My legs hurt but I wiggle my toes a little to make sure I’m still able to.

It takes a lot of effort to be able to wiggle my toes, and I’m happy I’m able to.

Hawk is looking at me cautiously and I know he’s waiting until the coast is clear. I’m eager for him to tell me when the hell we got married or how long I have been asleep.

“Baby, holy shit! I missed you! Fuck! I thought I was never gonna see you again.” His lips cover my face again and again in a comforting gesture but it confuses me even more. I try to will him to tell me what happened to me.

He kisses me gently on the lips and then kisses me once more before breathing me in. I smell his masculine scent which is just enough for me to know he’s real.

“Baby. I’m so fuckin’ sorry. Do you remember anything that happened?”

I shake my head.

“I walked into my house and some fucker had you passed out! It was fuckin’ horrible! He was tryin’ to rape you. Did he touch you?”

Tears start to flow down my eyes but I don’t even know how to answer him. I don’t know what happened to me and I don’t know anything about anything.

“Mom!” Riley cries out and she is running towards me. She grabs my hand on the other side of Hawk and she smiles at him.

“Did Capone go get you from school?”

“Yeah. He let me pick a radio station and took me to McDonald’s. I got a McFlurry.”

I’m glad to see the stress of my being in the hospital didn’t stop her from eating. That’s a good thing.

The doctor comes strolling into the room with a clipboard in his hand. He looks to be about fifty years old with a receding hairline.
