“What?”

Lucas shook his head. “No, it’s just… never mind.”

Emmy decided not to push it. “Anyway, as I said, nothing in these files. They didn’t seem particularly in depth.”

“Nope, they’re not, but that’s the best we have at the moment.”

“So, these files aren’teverythingabouteveryone?”

“No. Sorry if I gave that impression. These are practically what we hand out to the press. For some reason, the agency is being cagey about releasing the personnel files.”

Emmy let it go. At least she didn’t have to worry that she’d left the files in her cabin. Man, her head was all over the place now. Maybe she should quit, try something else. It would certainly make her life easier…

“Em? You still with me?”

She blinked and smiled at her boss. “Yeah, sorry.”

Lucas studied her. “You still look tired.”

That would be the marathon sex sessions. “I’m okay.”

“Sure there’s no concussion? I think the doctor should check you out.”

“Honestly, Lucas, I’m fine.” Emmy started to walk toward the door. “But I’ll get some rest, don’t worry.”

Making her way back to her cabin, Emmy was so lost in her thoughts she didn’t notice Kevin McKee appear beside her, and she jumped a little when he began to speak.

“Emmy, I wanted to say I’m sorry again. I know I upset you earlier.”

Emmy stopped. “Kevin, it’s fine, it’s okay. I needed to hear it. I’ve been burying my head in the sand about Zach.” She started to walk again, hoping he would leave her alone but instead Kevin kept up with her.

“I feel bad. Look,” he touched her arm, “Can we talk? In private?”

Emmy’s hackles went up immediately. “I told you, Kevin, there’s no need.”

Kevin laughed a little self-consciously. “It’s not about that, it’s… man, I used to be good at this.”

Emmy realized in horror he was asking her out. Nope. Shut this down. “Kevin, if you’re talking about what I think you are, I think you should know… I’m seeing someone.”

Your boss.

Kevin gave a good-natured shrug. “Ah well, can’t blame a guy for trying. ’Night, Emmy.”

Emmy watched him walk away. That was weird. They’d barely said two words to each other before now…he knows. He knows you suspect something.

Emmy shivered suddenly. Men like Kevin were insidious—did he really think he could distract her by appealing to her ego?Asshole.

Instead of going back to her cabin, she went to find Duke. He was playing pool in the bar with Hank and Greg but tapped out when she asked him if she could talk to him.

Outside she pulled him aside. “You up for some off the books snooping?”

“Always. Who’s our mark?”

Emmy fixed him with a look and saw his face fall. “Oh, Em, really?”

“Yes, really.” She was a little irked now. Why was everyone so preoccupied with defending Kevin McKee?

Duke sighed. “Fine. But this is two favors you owe me. What do you suggest?”
