Orin grinned. “Say the words again to me, Emmy, so I can start to believe my good fortune. Will you marry me?”

Emmy smiled at him. “Yes, Orin Bennett, I will marry you.”

“I just had to be sure.” He leaned his forehead against hers. “I’m the most selfish man on the planet because I’m asking you to give up so much—so, so much—and I feel like I’m reaping all the rewards.”

“Nah. I nabbed the President of the United States. I won the lottery.” She giggled to show she was just kidding, and Orin laughed.

“Seriously,” he said, “it’s going to be a rough ride from here on in. Sure you want to do it?”

“With you? Hell yes. Let’s make a difference.” She winced and shifted a little, pressing the meds button to release a shot of morphine. “Orin… tell me again about Kevin McKee. I’m sure I didn’t take it all in the other day.”

“You were right. He served with Max Neal in Iraq. What we’ve found out from the military is that Kevin and Max were involved in some of stand-off with a bunch of Iraqi teenagers. Things went south. Long story short, Neal took the fall for Kevin, big time. Kevin got his record sealed—strange what old family money can do—and yeah, he fooled us all.”

“Why did he want you dead?”

Orin shook his head. “He didn’t. I was the favor Max Neal called in or he would have gone public. Kevin told the agency that he was looking for Neal, too, that if he found him first, Neal would have gotten the bullet.” Orin sighed, smoothing a hand over her forehead. “But he sent those men to kill you and Martin Karlsson. He thought Max Neal had told Karlsson about the incident in Iraq—and Karlsson had told you.”

“God…” Emmy felt sick. She’d let that man into her apartment. Orin shook his head.

“Kevin admitted he went to your apartment to kill you but couldn’t do it.”

“He just gave me a warning. Stupid man. If anything, that made me more determined to find out about him.” Emmy sighed. “So, really, it had very little to do with the Ellis case?”

“Yup. But you paid the price, darling, and I’m so sorry.”

“Hey,” Emmy said with a soft smile. “I’m going to be fine, Orin. I would take that bullet over and over again for you, you know that.”

Orin winced and placed his hand over her wounded belly. “Never again. Never.” He kissed her gently. “From now on, Emmy, good things only, I swear. Having said that, we may have a fight on our hands.”

Emmy grinned at him. “So what else is new?”
