Duke smirked, and she grinned at him. “What?”

“An agent, yes.You?No. Come on now, Emmy. I know he’s fond of you. Those late night chats?”

“Nothing has ever happened.” Not quite a lie…

“I know that. I know you. But Em, let’s be real. The pres likes you a lot. You know he had someone to dinner the other day, a date?”

Ouch. Jealousy shot through her, but Emmy pushed it away. “No, I didn’t.”

“Word is that even though the woman was great, the pres wasn’t feeling it, because he’s already smitten with someone else.”

“Jesus, Duke, if Lucas ever, ever heard anything…”

“Lucas is an adult,” Duke said shortly, “and these things happen. Anyway, I’ve said enough.”

When they reached Camp David, Duke accompanied her to the Aspen Lodge, then with a wink, left her with Moxie Chatelaine to wait for Orin Bennett. Moxie hugged her. “God, you scared us, girl.”

“Sorry, Mox.” Emmy took a deep breath in. “Listen… why?”

Moxie smiled. “I think you know the answer to that, Emmy. Now, look, I told Orin I wanted to talk to you before he came in. He sulked about it,” she chuckled, and Emmy laughed, “but he agreed because this is… unprecedented. Also, if he’s reading the situation wrong, I don’t want to put you into an uncomfortable position, so to speak.”

“He’s not.” Emmy’s voice was quiet, but steady. “He’s not reading the situation wrong.”

Moxie patted her hand. “Then… I can ask him to come in?”

“Yes.”

Moxie smiled. “Then we’ll make it work, Em. Don’t worry about anything. Don’t worry about Lucas or your job. Just…especially this week…just be. There will be no questions from anybody.”

Emmy swallowed hard. “Okay.” Her composure broke then. “What am I doing?”

“The most natural thing in the world, Emmy. You can’t help who you love.”

Emmy nodded. “I know.”

“That’s why he wanted to come here. Here, the world can go away. Here… it’s a different world. You can be together.”

Emmy felt her eyes widen, not really believing what she was hearing—or what she might be about to do. “How?”

And then she heard his voice behind her, and as she shot to her feet, Orin Bennett smiled at her.

“Because there aresomeperks to being president, my lovely Emmy.”
