Chapter Seventeen

Orin nodded and grunted his way through his morning briefing, hoping that it didn’t contain anything too serious. Afterwards Moxie chuckled as they walked back to Aspen. “Did you hear any of that?”

“Give me a break, Mox, I’m exhausted.” But he grinned. “It’s not easy being the Leader of the Free World.”

Moxie cackled delightedly. “Especially when you’ve been, um,upall night.”

“Mox.”

“Oh, come on! Give me some detail! I did run interference for you.”

Orin chuckled. “You did.” He rubbed his eyes. “If you thought if I scratched that itch, I’d get over it, you were wrong. I’m crazy about her, Mox.”

“I know, doofus. Why do you think I set this up?” Moxie was smiling, then her smile faded. “But it’s going to be a lot harder at the White House. We might need to bring in some more allies.”

Orin shook his head. “No. I promised Emmy. No one else knows. If Lucas Harper found out…”

Mox frowned. “Orin… nothing comes without sacrifice. If this thing with Emmy is more than a hook-up, then decisions will have to be made. She knows she won’t be able to protect you and you? I know you—you would rather die than let someone you care about take a bullet for you.”

“God.” Orin sat down heavily. “It’s hercareer, Mox. How can I ask her to give it up? How monumentally selfish would that be?”

“Well, you can’t. But this thing can’t be more than sex. Don’t fall in love with her.”

“Mox, you realize you encouraged this? Now you’re telling me to hold back? What if I want more?”

“Then Emmy will lose her job, possibly even be prosecuted for sleeping with her protectee.”

Orin groaned. “Shit, Mox…”

“You needed to get laid, and you liked her. Emmy likes you, too. You’re adults. But if it gets serious…”

“I got it.”

Moxie get up and patted his shoulder. “Dude, I’m not saying you can’t be happy, but you both have to be realistic. If you and Emmy want more, one or both of you is going to have to give up your job. I’m not trying to rain on your parade; it’s just I’ve never seen that look in your eyes before.”

Orin raised his eyebrows. “What look?”

Moxie smiled at him, her eyes soft. “Love, Orin. Love.”

Emmy was feeling equally uncomfortable as Lucas came to see how she was. As she sat with her colleague, her thighs still aching from the marathon sex sessionwith their boss, she felt guilty, embarrassed, and utterly unprofessional.

But not regretful. Last night had been the most erotic, sensational night of her life, and she knew that she was hooked. Even now she recalled the way his mouth felt closing over her nipple, or his long, warm fingers stroking her clit until it became rock-hard and her vagina flooded with desire.

His long, thick, magnificent cock sliding in and out of her… Emmy bit her lip to try to drag her attention back to Lucas.

Her boss had a sheaf of papers in his hand. “The entire White House staff’s personal files. Everyone up to and including the President. You wanted in. Well, this is it. Find any link, however tenuous.”

“Actually, I already have one.”

Lucas sighed. “I know. Em… Kevin McKee has been profiled up and down. It was he who persuaded President Bennett to run. It was McKee who was credited for a large part of getting him to the Oval.”

“This isn’t some left brain hiccup, Lucas. He went to Princeton, just like Max Neal and Martin Karlsson.”

Lucas sighed, holding up his hands. “Fine. Just, look. You find anything, come to me. We can’t risk any whiff of a witch-hunt because of Zach.Iknow that’s not the case,” he added hurriedly, seeing the grim look on Emmy’s face, “but it is a complication.”

“Fine.”

When Lucas had gone, Emmy made herself some tea and sat down with the files, trying to focus on her work. Every minute though, she kept reliving the touch of Orin’s fingers on her skin, his gentle caresses, his masterful way of fucking her…damn.Emmy closed her eyes and let out a long shaky breath. She hadn’t had any sleep, but she had never felt more alive, more awake.
