“It will. Send me the lease and I’ll have it back to you soon.” His grin made me shiver with delight.

“I’ll open the apartment myself and leave the key code and a copy of the signed lease on the counter in the kitchen. I only need the name of the people who will reside there, a copy of their driver’s licenses, and the plate numbers and makes and models of any cars that they’ll park there.”

“Sloan Rivers.” He gave me a wink. “A black Lincoln MKZ, plate number RIV002. And she’ll text you a copy of her license.”

“Great. I’ll get that lease sent to you very soon, Mr. Baldwyn. Goodbye.”

He’d astonished me. “You memorized that?” I hadn’t noticed him giving my car any attention at all.

“Yeah.” Putting his cell into his breast pocket, he asked, “So, the plate—what’s that mean?”

I wasn’t happy with the license plate of my car. But I couldn’t change it anytime soon. “My ex registers his plates that way. RIV is for Rivers and then he gives the cars numbers. Mine was 002 and his was 001. Stupid, I know.”

“And you’re sure you wouldn’t like me to get you another car?” He rolled his chair to his desk. “Because if it bothers you to have things he gave you, it’s not a problem in the least to get you a car. I can have one here before the end of the day.”

It was nice to know that he had my back if I really needed that sort of thing. “I like my car. But if it gets to be a problem, then I’ll definitely take you up on the offer. And thank you for the apartment.” I had no idea what sort of problems I would have getting out of my current lease. But I wasn’t about to say a thing about that to him.

“You bring in the bill your current apartment sends you for breaking the lease and we’ll take care of it.” He opened the desk and pulled out a laptop computer.

Is he psychic?“Are you sure about that?” I didn’t want to be a bother. “I should get on the phone with the cable company to get my services transferred.”

“Nah, the complex is all-inclusive. No need to transfer anything—electric, internet, cable—they’re already on. Just turn off the services you currently have.”

“So, I won’t have any bills at all?” I felt as if this was too good to be true. “Baldwyn, I can’t.” I felt that wasn’t a strong enough word. “No, Iwon’tbe a kept woman.”

Slowly, he turned to me, his green eyes set on mine. “This is abusinessdealing,Sloan. You’re not kept in any way. I won’t have access to your home. No one will. You’re not expected to do anything for me or my brothers or anyone connected with this endeavor except legit business. Tell me you understand that clearly.”

“Now I do.” For a moment I felt stupid for what I’d said. “Sorry. My marriage has kind of messed me up. Thank you for this business opportunity and the perks that go with it. I appreciate it and I promise to try extremely hard to believe in the best here.”

“You should believe in it. I’m your client and I am your friend. Nothing more than that, Sloan. Nothing.” Getting up, he walked out of the office.

I put my face in my hands. He came back in with two bottles of water and nudged me with one. “Oh, you’re back.”

“Yeah. So, let’s get to work, shall we? I can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with so far. This is my dream and I’m hoping we can make it the way I want to. And if we can’t, then I hope you can come up with something I’ll at least like.”

“Like?” I wasn’t about to let him settle with just liking something. I wanted him to love it. All of it. “Oh, I’ll make sure we can get this resort the way you want it. I want a five-star review from you, Baldwyn Nash. When this is all said and done, I want you and your brothers to love what we’ve built.”

“I’m sure we will love it, Sloan.” He eased back in his chair, hands behind his head, closing his eyes as if seeing the sight of the finished resort in his mind.

And all I could do was gaze at him with adoration.I hope he’s not too good to be true.

Chapter Five

Baldwyn

A month into the project, things were going smoothly. I had to hand it to Sloan, who had no problem managing the other engineers, for keeping things moving forward.

Meeting the Gentrys’ private plane at the airport, I picked up Tyrell who had flown into Austin to make a quick visit to the worksite.

Sliding into the front passenger seat, he smiled at me. “You’re looking happy, Baldwyn. Things must be going great.”

“They are.” Taking off to get him downtown, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. “We’ve made some great connections with the contractors we’ve hired. I think our idea of hiring newbies was a good idea.”

“I wasn’t so sure about that,” he admitted. “But I didn’t want to stomp on your dreams either. I’m glad it’s working out for you.”

I noticed that he hadn’t brought an overnight bag. “You’re leaving today?”

“Yeah. I’m just going to check things out then get back on the plane and get back home. I don’t like sleeping without my girl. And the ride back home is less than an hour, so why stay overnight?”
