Chapter Twenty
Alexa
After the scorching sex dream I’d had the other night, the idea of Patton sleeping with me made me very nervous. But the pained expression on his handsome face made me even more uncomfortable. “I’ll sleep on top of the blanket, Alexa. I didn’t mean to make you think otherwise.”
“It’s just that I move a lot in my sleep,” I came up with. Nodding, I went on, “I might kick you—you know, in the,” I ran my hand in a circular motion to gesture to my private area, “family jewels.”
Smiling, he lost the expression that bothered me so much. “Oh. Well, I’ll just have to take my chances, I guess. It worried me when I woke up and heard you making those sounds, like you were in pain. I want to be right next to you, just in case you have another nightmare. That way I can wake you up before your body gets too stressed.”
Holy moly!“How sweet of you.” I didn’t know what else to say to that. I hadn’t been experiencing any pain in that dream, but maybe he was right. He could wake me up as soon as I started moaning and thrashing around. But then again, when he woke me up from a dream like that, I might just grab him and kiss him and do only the lord in Heaven knew what.
Pulling up to the gated entrance to what I now considered to beourhome, he pushed the button on his visor to open it. “We’ve come this far; I don’t want anything to happen to the baby.” A grin pulled his lips up at the corners. “Patty. I don’t want anything to happen toPatty.”
“You have no idea how wonderful you are, do you?” I adored the man. My only wish was that I could let him know just how completely I did.
Parking the truck, he looked at me with what I could only describe as joy. “Do you know how wonderful you are?”
My cheeks heated as embarrassment swept through me. “Why, because I want to name our baby after you?”
“For that, and much, much more.” His eyes darted to my hand, which had moved to the door handle. “You wait right there. You’re not to walk further than to the bathroom and back, remember?”
As he got out of the truck, I had to wonder if he’d had a wheelchair delivered while we were away—he always seemed to be so prepared. Anticipating my every need. But he couldn’t have, as the doctor had given us the orders as we were on our way home.
He opened the door then unbuckled my seatbelt. “I’ll carry you inside.”
“Patton, no.” That was really too much. “I just walked into and out of the doctor’s office. I can walk into the house.”
“Nope.” He scooped me up and carried me inside. “Wewillfollow the doctor’s orders to the letter.”
It was hard for me to believe that anyone could be as perfect as Patton. “I suppose it will do no good to argue with you about this, so I’ll just say thank you.”
“You are very welcome.” He took me inside then marched me all the way to my bedroom. “I’ll let you relax on your bed while I get things fixed up in my room for you. And I’ll find a shower chair thingy and have it delivered too.”
Apprehension filled me. “Your room?”
“Yes, I’m going to move you into my bedroom. I’ve got the bigger shower in there, with the jets that shoot out from everywhere. Plus, my bed is bigger, so that’ll give you room to move around. I don’t want you to be uncomfortable for even a moment.” He put me on my bed then turned to leave. “I’m also going to order you some comfy clothes and pajamas. Your days of sleeping naked are over—for now.” He turned and grinned at me, and it came off much sexier than I bet he realized. “And so are mine.”
“I see.” Taking a deep breath, I tried not to think about the night that lay ahead of us. I tried not to think about how much I appreciated and loved Patton. I tried not to think about how I would be able to hide my sexual attraction to him while we slept in the same bed. But it was impossible not to think about those things.
“You should take a nap while I get things ready for you.” He closed the door, leaving me alone to wrestle with my inner thoughts.
I must’ve fallen asleep, because the next thing I knew I was waking up when I heard the door opening. He peeked inside. “You awake?”
Yawning, I stretched. “Yes. I guess I was more tired than I realized. I drifted off almost right away.”
“I didn’t want to say anything, but I could tell that you were tired. You haven’t been getting much sleep, what with the nightmares and all.” He walked in and went toward the bathroom. “I’m going to gather your toiletries and put them in the other bathroom. Then I’ll come back to get you. Do you wanna hang out in the living room for a while?”
Being stuck in a bedroom for the next three months didn’t sound appealing to me in the least. “Yes, I don’t want to stay in one room too long. I think it’ll depress me.”
“I think you’re right. We can sit outside some too. I’ve got those zero gravity chairs on the back deck.” He stopped and held up one finger. “Oh. And pick out the place you want me to order dinner from.”
I’d been dreaming about eating pizza. “I know you said that I can order from anywhere at all and not to worry about the price.”
“And I mean that.” He went into the bathroom then came out with an armload of toiletries. “I’ll be right back.”
“I want pizza,” I shouted out after him.
When he came back, he put his hands on his hips, his lips pulling up to one side. “Pizza? Really?”
