“Who knows what the future holds?” Patton asked. “All I know for now is that there is a woman who needs me to be a father to her baby. There is a baby who is going to need a father, and I intend to be that father in every way. This will be my first-born child, Baldwyn. Get used to it.”
His words made my heart soar. Running my hand over my flat belly, I whispered, “He will be a great father. You have nothing to fear, little one.”
“And what about being a husband to its mother, Patton? How will you be that for her when you won’t do the things a woman needs from her husband? I know your heart’s in the right place, but this will end badly. One of you will eventually end up having sex with someone else or something like that, and that’s when things will crash down on you both.”
“Sex isn’t everything, Baldwyn. I can do without it.” Patton got quiet before adding, “For a year, I can do without it. We’ll see what happens when the urge hits me. But you don’t have to worry. I’ll always be honest with Alexa.”
“So, you think that telling her that you’ll be screwing some other woman won’t bother her?” Baldwyn laughed. “You’re living in a false reality, bro.”
“Do you think I’m not aware of that?” Patton asked. “This isn’t normal, and it feels that way. But I’ve committed myself to Alexa and our baby.”
“Herbaby,” Baldwyn corrected him.
“Ourbaby,” Patton said with force. “This isourbaby. Not just hers. And I don’t want anything ever said to this child about it being otherwise. If you can’t accept that, then you and I will be having some issues.”
With a heavy sigh, Baldwyn got up, his footsteps going toward the front door. “I can see that I’m not going to get anywhere with you, Patton. This will never play out the way you think it will.”
“Oh, yeah?” Patton asked. “And how’s that? Because I haven’t thought about how it will play out at all. The only thing I have thought about is thatIwill be this child’s father, legally. And I won’t ever turn my back on Alexa or our child.”
The sound of the door closing told me his brother had left, and I couldn’t stop myself from running out to Patton. I threw my arms around him, tears pouring from my eyes. “Thank you! Thank you so much!”
“I’m sorry you heard that.” Hugging me tightly, he kissed the top of my head. “We will get through this, you know. People will get used to it. They always do.” He let me go then turned away, his shoulders slumping a bit.
It only made me care for him more. I could already see the weight he carried on his impeccably broad shoulders—all because of me and my decision to trust an untrustworthy man.
