I’d been researching a lot about pregnancy and parenthood, but I hadn’t read much on what happened during a woman’s pelvic exam, so I had no idea what the doctor was going to do with that thing in her hand. I watched as she pulled out some sort of lubricant and slathered it onto the silver thing.

I couldn’t take my eyes off it. My stomach got tight and my head got light. “What’s that?”

The doctor held it up. “This is a speculum. We insert it into the vagina so we can take a look around.”

Alexa’s eyes flew open, landing on the contraption that was about to be inserted into her. “What do you need to see in there?”

I thought I’d been alarmed by the device, but Alexa looked damn near frantic. “It’s okay, babe. I’m sure the doc here knows how to be gentle with that thing.”

A smirk came across the woman’s lips as she muttered. “I’m a hell of a lot gentler than most men who go poking around in there.”

Alexa looked at me with red-stained cheeks and wide eyes. I ran my hand over her head as I held her shaking hand in the other. “Just close your eyes and this will soon be over.”

Sitting on a little rolling stool, the doctor grabbed a huge light then pulled it around to shine it on Alexa’s privates. When she turned the light on, I went blind for a moment. “Let’s see what we have here.” I couldn’t see exactly what she was doing, but by the way Alexa’s hand tightened around mine, I got the idea that the silver thing was being inserted.

I heard a weird cranking noise and had to ask, “What’s that sound?”

“Me, opening up the speculum,” she said as if it were nothing at all. But then she looked up at me, directly at my dick. Shrugging, she went back to work.

As I stood there, feeling a little like a piece of meat, I thought about what she must be looking at. A tight, inexperienced vagina—one that hadn’t been touched in two months now.

Alexa’s voice shook as she asked, “Is everything looking okay?”

“Yes.” The doctor’s head popped up over the sheet as she looked at Alexa. “How long have you two been together, may I ask?”

Now I wassureshe was wondering how in the hell this young woman had such a tight little vagina when she’d been having sex with a man like me. So, I answered that question, “We’ve been dating for six months but we’ve only been having sex in the last couple of months.”

She smiled at me politely but looked a bit confused by my answer. “Oh, well, it’s good to know you’re not having any problems in that department.” I could feel my cheeks getting red, realizing I had let my imagination get the better of me.

“So you’ve only been together six months?” She looked at Alexa and then at me. “I’m not one to pry, but this baby is going to make your marriage harder than it is right now. Many new parents find that couple’s therapy can really strengthen their relationship and help with the transition to parenthood.”

After imparting that advice, the doctor reached over to grab an exceptionally long cotton swab out of a jar full of them. Waving it around, she said, “Get that therapy and get into the fun of having a new marriage, you guys. It’ll help your connection grow.” She moved her hand in a way that told me she was now inserting the cotton swab.

Alexa growled, “Ow!”

“Sorry, this part is a little uncomfortable sometimes,” the doctor agreed. “But I’ve got to get a sample to send to the lab for testing. We want to make sure you don’t have anything wrong going on with your reproductive cells.” She put the cotton swab into a vial then sealed it. “And that’s a wrap, folks.” She cranked the silver thingy then pulled it out and slung it into the sink. “You can get dressed now and my office will give you a call when the results from the pap smear are in.”

Alexa leaned up on her elbows. “I thought we might get to hear the baby’s heartbeat today.”

“At two months?” She shook her head. “It’s a bit early for that.” She looked back and forth at us. “But you know what, let’s give it try.”

My pulse quickened at the thought that we’d get to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time. “Thanks, doc.”

“Not a problem.” She pulled up Alexa’s shirt before smearing some more of the lube onto a flat thing that hung around her neck. Placing it on Alexa’s tummy, she noticed the goosepimples that rose on Alexa’s arms. “This is cold.” She put the end pieces of the device into her ears and listened.

“It sure is.” Alexa shuddered as she looked at me with a perplexed expression.

“Oh, yeah, I got something here.” She turned on a machine beside the table and then grabbed something else that she coated with the lube before placing it on Alexa’s stomach. “Listen up.”

Soft whooshing filled the small room, and I knew what I was listening to immediately. “That’s it.”

Tears ran down Alexa’s face. “The heartbeat. It’s so fast.”

“It’s so strong.” I leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. “Just like you.”

Alexa’s lips quivered and I knew she was about to start crying. So I kissed her lips, trying to help calm her down.

“Aww, see,” the doc said, breaking the spell. “You two will be fine. But seriously, get some counseling before the baby comes. A newborn will test even the strongest of relationships.”

I think we’ll be just fine.
