“The constable checked their safety. I doubt for a moment that Davina would harm them in any way, and you know that,” Phillip said, not letting go of her.

“Now let me kiss you, and I will deal with that woman later. I need your closeness, Alice; it has been an anxious few hours, and in my mind, I am ready for battle. My body is fraught with aching tension. Please, my love, let me be with you for a few moments longer. Then I can deal with this situation calmly and sensibly.”

She stroked his face, pulling him closer so they could kiss again. His warm breath soothed her mind, and his touch sent a thrill through her body. It wasn’t a time for making love, but Phillip was right; the night had been fraught, filled with fear and torment.

“Come, my love, let me soothe your soul,” she whispered to him as he moved to lay on top of her. “I love you so very much; let me help to bring calm into your life.”

“Thank you, my love,” he whispered, thrusting his manhood into her. “I need this so very much. I want to be inside you and ... ugh …”

Alice lay with her legs spread open, accepting Phillip’s thrusting in and out of her, which he did with an urgent speed. It was almost painful, but she could tell he needed the intimacy; the closeness only sex could provide. Always she found pleasure in their lovemaking, but this time Phillip was like an animal, his needs overtaking his senses.

“I want you so badly, Alice,” he huffed, the speed of his pounding beyond anything she’d known before.

“I want you too, Phillip, but …”

“Arrgghh!” he called out, sending one final thrust deep into her wetness.

At the same time, she felt her own orgasm build up, as if out of nowhere, and she, too, called out. But hers was a mixture of pain and pleasure, a strange sensation. She managed to quieten her voice as the spasms of pure lust quivered through her.

It was all over in seconds, but it left her feeling complete.

“I … I am so sorry, Alice,” Phillip said as he climbed from her body. “I am not sure I know what overcame me. Please, tell me I did not hurt you.”

“No … no, Phillip, you did not hurt me,” Alice assured him as he lay by her side panting. “You have been tense all night, and I was glad to be the vessel of your release. I love you, Phillip, so do not worry.”

“I would hate myself if I ever hurt you, Alice,” he said, pulling her over with his strong arm so that her head leaned on his chest. “Forgive me if I rushed things; I wanted you so much.”

“Shhhh …” Alice said, reaching up to kiss the protruding Adam’s apple on his throat. “If we love each other, then we cannot harm one another. Let it be, Phillip, and we will say no more of it.”

She did feel a little confused in her mind, not really understanding how a man’s mind worked. While she was content to make love with him, the speed at which it had all happened had left her baffled. She was sure that Phillip loved her, but for some reason, she felt used, as if her body was only there to satisfy the longings of a man. But hadn’t she enjoyed it too? The intimate ways of a man and a woman were all so new to her.

He stroked her blonde hair. “I will never do it like that again, Alice, I swear,” he said softly. “I allowed my lust to rule my head; I do not want to do that with you. Will you forgive me, my love?”

“Let us worry about such things another time,” she said, trying to sit up. “Can we now start to think of collecting the children?”

“Yes, of course,” he replied, throwing his legs over the side of the bed. “Do you feel ready to ride horseback? It will be quicker than taking a carriage.”

“Yes, I would prefer to get to them with speed, so horseback will be better,” she agreed. “I will refresh myself and see you downstairs shortly,” she added, needing to first clean the stickiness from between her legs.

“Yes, I want to visit my room before we leave,” Phillip said before leaving her alone.

All the while she bathed herself with a damp cloth, she thought of their lovemaking. Was it sinful what they did? Of course, it was wrong, they were not married, but because she loved him, she didn’t see how it could be sinful.

Not wanting to waste too much time, Alice soon found Phillip waiting for her downstairs.

“You ready to go and bring the children home?” he asked with a charming smile.

She nodded in agreement, sensing he was much more relaxed now that his tensions were gone. In a way, she felt that she had helped him. That was what their lovemaking had been about; he had needed to calm his inner demons. At least now, he wouldn’t feel like he was in a murderous battle. Although she wanted the French woman to suffer for what she’d done, she didn’t wish her any harm.

Mounting the horses that the stable hands had brought to the front of the house for them, she smiled to herself.

I am a woman now and no longer an innocent maiden, she thought. But I am also in love, and that makes all the difference.

With that thought, she set her horse to a canter, following Lord Phillip. As soon as they arrived at Haroth Hall gates, they set off into a gallop, on their way to bring the children back and into the bosom of those who loved them.

Chapter 36

The dawn chorus of birds sang out in the early morning breeze as Phillip and Miss Alice rode along. It seemed unreal how the birds went about their business, uncaring of what was happening in the human world. They knew nothing of kidnappings and scandals; all they wanted was to find food to feed their chicks for survival.
