As it ended, he collapsed on top of her, their wet, sticky bodies sticking together. But neither noticed nor cared.

“I love you so very much, Miss Alice Evans,” he whispered into her ear before climbing off.

As soon as he left her, she felt cold and started shivering. But her lover had thought of everything and helped dress her into her nightdress, scooping her up to place her underneath the warm covers. She expected him to leave, but he didn’t. Instead, he climbed into her bed and spooned her body with his firm nakedness. His warmth soon had her drifting off into a deep, satisfying sleep, where she would dream of her lover all night long.

When Alice awoke, the room was filled with the semi-light of day, and the lord of the manor still lay by her side. Panic set into her mind, and she went to shake the sleeping duke.

“Lord Phillip, please wake up,” she called out. “You will be seen in my bed; you must awaken.”

Instead of jumping from the bed, he lay on his back, giving her a wicked smile.

“What are you doing, Lord Phillip?” she asked, thinking he must still be half asleep.

“I am enjoying seeing your beautiful face first thing in the morning; why?” he asked, looking puzzled.

“No, you cannot delay,” she reprimanded, jumping out of bed. “You must go before the servants realise what has come about.”

Wasting no more time, she pulled the covers from his body, temporarily distracted by his nakedness and erect dick. Wicked thoughts flashed through her mind, but she pushed them aside, knowing he must make haste.

“Very well, if that is how you want to play this game,” he mumbled, sitting up and reaching for his pants. “Though I do not see why. Did you not enjoy last night?”

“Of course I did, but daylight is upon us,” she said, approaching him and fastening his buttons to hurry him along.

“What happens in daylight? Do we melt with the sun?” he said in jest, half laughing as he leaned down to peck her on the lips.

“There is no time for that, Lord Phillip; you must leave this room for your own sake,” she reprimanded. “Let us not forget that you are a duke, and I am a governess. Now go, and make sure no one sees you leaving. Goodbye, my love.”

Phillip sulkily walked towards the door, “Must we part like this?” he begged her, reluctant to leave.

Alice waved her arms, wishing he would no longer delay, “Go, go.”

“I will see you at breakfast then?” he questioned, standing in the open doorway.

“For goodness’ sake, go and close the door behind you,” she called out in panic, wondering what had got into him.

Did he not realise the seriousness of their secrecy? Pacing the room, she prayed that none had seen him leaving her room, or there would be a terrible scandal for the Tilbury family name.

Chapter 40

Phillip sat eating his breakfast, feeling completely satisfied and content. In his mind, all was well with the world, and today he was finally going to speak with Miss Alice about their future together. As she entered the dining room, he thought she looked around a little sheepish. He supposed she was surprised by the presence of William and Clara, as it wasn’t normal for the butler and the housekeeper to be serving breakfast.

He’d taken the seat at the head of the smaller table, with Mr Eli on one side and Alice then took the other. She glanced at him fleetingly but seemed fearful of letting her glare linger.

“Are you unwell, Miss Alice?” Phillip teased.

“No, Lord Phillip, but there appears to be a lot of servers for breakfast time, and I …”

“Do not fear, Miss Alice. No one knows that we are in love,” Phillip said, purposely raising his voice as he watched Miss Alice stare back at him with wide eyes. “Oh ... that is other than Eli here, but then he is my best friend, so that is excusable.” He paused, giving her a charming smile. “Then again, William might know, of course, but what doesn’t a butler know, eh?”

“I am wondering if you are unwell, Lord Phillip?” Miss Alice asked with a small gasp as she put her hand to her mouth. “You are saying things you do not mean.”

“Then there is Clara, who knows that we love one another because she is your friend,” he continued. “And let us not forget Betsy; she might have an inclination too, seeing as how you work so closely together.”

Alice turned from a bright red flush to a pale white, looking as if she might faint. Phillip realised it was time to end his game.

“What I am trying to say to you, my most beautiful Miss Alice.” He spoke at the same time as taking her hand in his. Alice flinched, attempting to pull her hand away, but he held on to it. “Is that all the people who matter to us, every one of them knows of our love for one another.”

“Lord Phillip, you are not thinking straight!” she said, looking alarmed. “It must be the effects of all you have gone through. William, can you try and speak some sense into the duke?”
