“Vaayu, behave.” Adil admonished exasperatedly.
“Dude, how can you expect me to behave when you both are pitted against each other like this? I am not going to miss this chance. Please continue,” Vaayu grinned, and Adil rolled his eyes.
“You’re hopeless, V.” Kabir scoffed and turned to Adil.
“Adi, I want you to understand that we are both mature adults. And she is quite happy with me. She’s on cloud nine.”
“Of course, she’d be on cloud nine, you asshole. Kyra had a crush on you for ages. She’s Mira’s little sister, and you are my brother. What if things don’t work out?” Adil yelled.
“What if they do, Adi? I’m not some random dude-bro you have to be worried about. I’m your brother. You should trust me.”
“What a pitch,” Vaayu spoke.
“V, don’t.” Kabir shot him a dirty look. “I’m not playing with her feelings if that’s what you are afraid of. Do you think I didn’t think about everything you mentioned right now? I tried to stay away, okay. But I couldn’t. I just couldn’t.” Kabir sighed in resignation.
“Have you thought about what would happen if Dad and Kapoor uncle knew? You shouldn’t have—” Adil snarled.
“It’s impossible for me not to pursue her, Adi. I can’t give her up.” A sardonic laugh escaped his lips. “This isn’t just an obsession...it’s much more than that. She means more than that. She’s the reason I feel anchored. She has captured my heart. She fuels my passion for living. Her smile makes me forget a bad day. She inspires me not only to be a good man but also to be the best version of myself. She’s what I never knew I wanted, but now, she’s all I need.”
Adil and Vaayu stared open-mouthed in shock on hearing Kabir’s confession.
Adil looked out the window thoughtfully for a minute, his head in his hands and looked at Kabir. He leaned forward, “Kabir, if you hurt Kyra, then brother or not, I will chop you off into little pieces and feed them to the vultures with my bare hands.”
“It’s my promise that I would never hurt her purposely.”
“Enough now. I don’t want you guys to slice up your palms and seal the promise with blood. C’mon. Get up and hug each other. Remember, brothers for life.” Vaayu stood, pulling them up with him.
“You watch too many movies, V.” Adil reluctantly got up and turned to Kabir. “So, you and Kyra for life, huh?” He smiled and hugged Kabir.
“Yeah. That’s the plan.” Kabir slapped Adil’s back in typical bro style.
“Have you told her that you love her?”
“Not yet. But she knows I’m serious about her.”
“Well, what are you waiting for? Tell her soon because I’m not going to lie to Mira about this.”
“I will. Soon.” Kabir assured Adil.
“I never thought we’d see the day when you get all smitten over someone. You need me to say I told you so?” Vaayu smiled broadly as he gave Kabir a warm hug.
“I need you to just shut the fuck up, V.” Kabir laughed as Vaayu punched him playfully.
????
Kabir and Kyra exited the company elevator in the evening, holding hands. Kyra withdrew her hand from Kabir’s grasp as people watched them go outside. When Kabir again slipped his fingers in Kyra’s, she was startled. The gentle but firm grip caused her to jerk as a lightning bolt shot through her body.
Oh my god.She looked at Kabir, asking silently, “What are you doing?”
His eyes twinkled as he looked down at her as if he was expecting that reaction. He said, “My brothers know.”
“What?” Kyra was so stunned that everything around her faded away.
“I told them today.”
“What did they say?”
“Adil was not happy at first. But later, he came around. If it helps, he has sworn to kill me if I ever hurt you.” Kabir squeezed her hand.
