“Check it out for yourself. The climate of Mumbai seems to be just as volatile as that psychopath.”
“Looks like it. Fine. I’ll bring Kyra safely. Just relax. Do you want me to get something from outside, by the way?
“No, all that is taken care of. You just reach here in tow with my sister.”
“Aye, aye, captain. Give me ten minutes, and I will be out of here with Kyra.” Kabir reassured Mira, hesitating a little. The cosmos seemed determined to place him in Kyra’s presence despite his best efforts to stay far away from her as possible.
He set the financial report aside and looked at the sketches Adil sent him. He stared at the perfect and spectacular sketch of a building. He did not inherit his father’s flair for designing, but he was good at numbers, and that’s what he did. He worked hard and smart in his field.
His family appreciated that, and their bonding with each other was strong. His mom, Astha Oberoi, was the one to strengthen the bond between them. He smiled as he thought about his beautiful mom, who was closer to him than his other brothers.
On his way to the basement parking lot, he walked by the office with the golden plate bearing the initials CSO. He quietly rapped his knuckles on the door and turned the knob to see if Kyra was there. He peeked inside to see Kyra working away behind her desk. She must be putting the finishing touches on the newstrategies report. He had ignored her for far too long. Now he had to talk to her.
“Late night?” Kabir asked.
Kyra swiftly raised her head, her brown eyes darting to him from behind her glasses. “You scared the living crap out of me.” She had a shocked expression as she clutched her heart.
When did she start wearing glasses?
He realised she must occasionally be wearing contacts instead of them. As usual, her long, black hair was tied up. He wasn’t certain if he had ever seen it styled differently now that he thought about it. He was puzzled as to why he had even entertained such a thought.
He clenched his teeth in frustration while trying to understand his teenage crush-like behaviour. He didn’t intend to act on the pull he felt for her. She did not seem fazed by him and was always friendly and professional. He shouldn’t feel bad about it because it was great.
That’s what he wanted from her, wasn’t it?
“I thought you were gone for the day,” she said. “You left at noon.”
He was surprised that she observed him so closely. “I took a few people out to lunch after my meeting at 2:30. I returned in the evening and finished a few things before calling it a day. Are you the only one here?”
“I’m sure.” She rolled her eyes.
He wanted to laugh because of the air of sarcasm in her response. The majority of the staff left at seven o’clock every day. Some even left at five. Earlier, his father and siblings didn’t mind working weird hours, but now that they had spouses and kids waiting for them at home, they all left the office on time if there wasn’t any red tape to navigate at work.
“Not everyone devotes the same amount of time to their jobs as you and I do, princess.” He mumbled to her as she typed fast on her laptop with smooth confidence.
“I didn’t know we were supposed to give each other nicknames,” she paused. “Was there something you wanted? I’m just about done.”
“I was supposed to give your highness a ride home from the office,” he answered, ignoring her nickname comment. He recognised a dismissal when he saw one. “I got a call from Mira saying that you weren’t answering your phone. We can leave once you’re done with your work here. I need to get home too.”
“Di called me?” She asked dubiously. “Shit. my battery must be dead.” She checked her phone and swore under her breath.
“Yes. That must be the problem.”
With his hands in his pockets, Kabir leaned casually against the door frame, looking all kinds of hot. Seeing the epitome of casual sexy leaning against her cabin door caused Kyra’s throat to dry and spiked her heart rate. The man could knock on her door every single day for eternity, and she wouldn’t get bored of looking at him.
“So, shall we leave?”
Her thoughts were interrupted by Kabir’s deep baritone that reached the pit of her stomach.Fuck.Only her ears were meant to be affected by the sound of his voice.
“Sure. I’ll see you in the foyer.” Nodding, she busied herself in gathering her belongings, not looking at him and giving him the satisfaction of seeing just how flustered she was.
“Meet you downstairs,” Kabir replied as Kyra stared at his fading shape like a star-struck fool. She was crazy.
????
The weather had significantly changed outside when she exited the elevator. There was no sign of Kabir or his car, and it was practically thundering outside. The security kiosk was empty as well when she got towards the entrance.
Where was everyone?
