He was Kabir Oberoi. The problem solver. He followed a strategy to focus and figure out what was going on. And now, he didn’t know what the heck was going on with him. Because everything was fine until she walked in. His behaviour now confirmed a plummeting IQ. Or maybe he was disoriented because they’d hired her behind his back.
Yeah. That was it.
It wasn’t because Kyra was wearing a powder blue skirt suit that clung to her body and highlighted her contours, making him want to bend her over the desk and have his way with her.
Shit. He went there again. He got up swiftly, his chair rolling back with force.
“What’s wrong?” Adil scowled.
“Nothing. I have a meeting in twenty.” Avoiding everyone’s gaze, he tried to tamp down the amorous thoughts. He turned the doorknob and exited the cabin, exhaling a sigh of relief.
Hell.
He had to acquiesce that his break-up had affected his brain and not his heart because he was an idiot to even think about a girl ten years younger than him in a lusty way. After giving himself a mental scolding, he went inside his cabin and did what he always did when things got complex. He locked himself away from the world around him to immerse himself in work. He drowned any thought of the gorgeous woman that plagued his mind, deciding to avoid her as long as he could.
FOUR
AFTER A FEW DAYS...
Kabir sat in his specifically designed, expensive, ergonomic chair to ease his severe back and neck issues from prolonged sitting. It was a wise investment and of excellent help. He knew how painful it was to spend the entire day behind a desk. Who knew sitting on one’s behind, staring at statistics and talking on the phone could be so mentally and physically taxing? Nothing could counteract the exhaustion that resulted from working twelve hours a day at a desk. Both his eyes and brain were exhausted.
He blinked several times after rubbing his eyes under his black-rimmed glasses. He was the only person in the office, and the time was exactly 8 p.m. Working till late was nothing new for him. He understood that big outcomes required a lot of time and effort. Even if it was demanding, he had no qualms about staying in office for that long.
This year, they had far exceeded sales from the previous year. They had set goals that were considered impossible to meet, but he knew better. He was correct when he projected their capability. He and his brother were solely responsible for the company’s astronomical financial success.
The ringing of his phone cut short his moment of self-congratulation. Mira’s name flashed on the screen. He answered by swiping at it.
“Hello, Bhabhi ji.” Kabir teased her. Mira hated it when he called her that.
“I’m not in the mood to joke, Kabir,” Mira huffed. “Where are you?”
“At the office.”
“Ugh. God. You’re going to work yourself into an early grave. Why are you still there? You ought to be having fun, dating gorgeous women and hanging out with people your own age.”
“You know, Mira, I’m busy,” he emphasised.
“I’m certain your father and brothers don’t want you to work so hard. It’s been a while since you and your girlfriend broke up, Kabir. It was just a breakup. Nobody died. Move on. Enjoy your life and have fun.”
For the past few months, she had been lecturing him on the same subject. However, he could understand where she came from. Even he would want her to live her life to the fullest if he thought she was in a rut.
“I’m 32 years old, Mira. You make it sound like I’ve already put one foot in the grave.”
“You don’t realise how fast time flies, oldie.”
He retorted, shaking his head, “Your husband is only two years older than me.”
“Still, the age goes by so fast, dude. You have no idea. Anyway, coming back to the topic of fun, you must come home now. We’re celebrating the opening of our new café yesterday at the Delhi airport.” She squealed.
“That’s incredible. Congratulations, Mira. I’m just taking care of a few last-minute things. I’ll be out of here soon enough.” He told her.
“That’s great. Now, do me a favour, please.”
“Tell me. You know I will do anything for you, sis.” He grinned at her antics. It is obvious why Adil fell in love with her and her charming personality.
“Can you bring Kyra with you as both of you will be coming to my place? I called her, but she isn’t answering. The weather outside looks dicey, and I don’t want her alone in the office when it’s raining.”
“Uh. It’s going to rain?” His smile vanished as he walked over to the window and opened the blinds. Sure enough, there was a rumble in the sky, and lightning could be seen over the horizon across the great expanse of choppy seas.
