She grabbed a bottle of water and sat down, gulping it greedily. It was indeed a scorching and humid Mumbai day. Her text alert went off again. Sighing, she picked up the phone she’d tossed over the couch.
Swiping the screen, she found two missed calls from Mira and one from Nitya. Also, there were 10 new generic messages and one from Adil.
Adil: Guess what? In two days, we will meet with the management of the city corporation of Shimla. It was planned out of the blue, and I need you to join me there. It will be cold in Roopganj, so pack accordingly for two days. I’ll pick you up at seven tomorrow morning. Be ready.”
Kyra: Are you serious?
Adil: When am I not? See you, kid.”
Kyra: This is a big deal. Looking forward to starting this project. And no kid business. I’m not a kid anymore :)
Adil: We’ll see :)
Laughing to herself, Kyra got up to cook and had her dinner. She was pretty pumped now that she was going on a work trip.
The following morning, Nitya knocked on her bedroom door as she came out of the shower. Kyra opened the door. Upon entering, Nitya removed an outfit from a bag and laid it out on the bed with a flourish. Kyra was in the middle of packing her bag with a few clothes and essentials. She zipped it closed and turned to face her sister.
“Tada... This is what you’re wearing for your work visit.”
Kyra ignored Nitya’s speculative gaze as she stepped over to the bed. She snagged the hanger with her fingers and stared at the sexiest lavender sweetheart neck wrap top with long sleeves, paired with skinny black jeans and a black jacket.
“I never wear such outfits to work, and you know it,” she said, ignoring Nitya’s mischievous smile.
“Yeah. You never wear it. But today, you will. You’re officially out of college. You’re an adult now. It’s your first work visit out of the city,” Nitya whispered. “You have to kill it, little sister.”
Kyra gave her a dry look. “It’s a work trip, Tiya. With Adil jiju. Why do I need to look killer?”
“Because I think women should dress to impress not only for special occasions but every single day.” She tapped Kyra’s nose. “Try it on. I have to leave in fifteen minutes for my meeting with Dad.”
“Everything alright? You sound nervous.” Kyra was very perceptive like that.
“I don’t know, Ky. Dad sounded a bit tense on the phone. But when the heck isn’t he tense? He is always worrying about something or the other.”
Nitya left, leaving Kyra alone in her bedroom. She felt a pang of nerves as she looked at the outfit lying on her bed.
God. It was just an outfit.
She huffed while she undressed quietly, listening to Nitya’s banging around in their apartment. A glance at the bedside clock told her that she had over an hour before Adil would pick her up for the airport. As she slipped on the clothes, she tried to think of everything she needed to stay for two days in Roopganj. She was excited about this work trip because this was her first time travelling to Shimla. She had always travelled internationally but missed out on visiting many beautiful locations in India. So, this visit was special.
Talking about special reminded her of Kabir and her last meeting with him.Gosh! It was awkward. He was royally ignoring her. Even his brothers thought that he wasn’t himself lately. But she wouldn’t worry about things that didn’t matter to her. If Kabir had any reservations about being in her presence, it was none of her business. She’d been avoiding him for a long time. She could do it again.
After getting ready, she inhaled sharply at the feel of the material against her skin. The top was super soft, and there was something about the snug fit and the way it moulded to her body that made her look and feel sexy. In the same way, the jeans hugged her shapely legs and ass as if they were tailored to fit her.
Why Nitya was making her wear this outfit was a mystery because she wasn’t really gaining anything from it. Kyra preferred to dress simply, even though her wardrobe was filled with the latest designer clothes, courtesy of her sisters. This was clearly not her choice of outfit. She would have chosen a simple blouse and comfortable pants over this ensemble. But she had a sister who forbade her from dressing however she wanted in public. It was both a blessing and a curse. At this very moment, she thought it was a curse.
With that thought, she turned and caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror propped up against the stark white wall. Her breath caught unintentionally.
“Whoa,” Kyra whispered.
Nitya’s face appeared behind her, grinning widely. “Daaaamn. You look hot, Ky.”
Her cheeks suffused with colour at her sister’s genuine praise. “I can never wear this dress with a normal bra, Tiya. The neck is too broad and a little low.”
“You sure cannot.” She nudged Kyra with her elbow. “That’s why I told you to wear the white strapless one. Just don’t bend over too fast for anything. And of course, you have a jacket with you. So, no problem there.”
“I can promise you I won’t bend at all, even if I want to.” Kyra skimmed her hands down the front of the top that showed off a flash of her slim waist, her long neck and a glimpse of the soft swell of her breast.
Thank God the jacket would make up for it. It had to… because the neck of the top was not overtly low, it was moderate but still showed a slice of cleavage that was not work-visit worthy. But besides that, she looked ... She looked like a princess. Her long hair and the lavender colour of the blouse made her look like a modern-day Rapunzel from Tangled, who had wardrobe upgrade.
