Kabir stood blankly as she placed her palms flat on his chest. He fisted his hands to control his reaction to her touch. “Leave! I don’t want to see you again.”

She looked into his eyes. The eyes that had hate and anger for her. His heart was beating like crazy, just like hers. She wanted to cry. She wanted to hug him and apologise for the words she’d just spewed.

God, what was she doing? Someone should kick her in the ass.

Kabir stared into the coffee-brown eyes that were steeled with something. What he didn’t know. He was angry at her for being selfish and a coward. And he was ready to punish her for making him regret every choice he had made up to that point. But even with all these things in his mind, one thing was fucking sure. He still wanted her.

Goddammit, he wanted her. And that was scary. The woman was hurting him, making him beg, and she didn’t care about their relationship, but he still wanted her like his last breath. He wanted to run for the hills, but her magnificent eyes kept him under her spell.

“I’m sorry for hurting you, Kabir. But give me this break. Just to make sense of it all, all right? I need some distance from you. From us. Clearly, I am a young and inexperienced girl unsure about her life, and you are a wonderful man who deserves the finest of everything in the world.” With those words and a watery peck on his cheek, she left him standing on the road, confused and angry, feeling like an injured puppy who got kicked out of his home.

Kabir knew that his broken heart fuelled his rage, but as the gravity of Kyra’s words seeped in, he felt a horrible sensation of dread. All through the week, she was slipping away from him. She was letting him down easily, the way he’d let down all the women before her.

She needed to think about it. She needed some time. She just wanted to get rid of him. She wanted him gone from her life.

He punched the basement wall so hard that he injured his knuckles. He felt the pain of the bloodied wound to his bones. But it was nothing compared to the pain he felt when he realised that he had lost Kyra Kapoor, and he fucking felt it to the core of his existence.

TWENTY-TWO

Kyra dashed inside her apartment and locked the door. She leaned back against the door, sobbing helplessly. She slinked to the floor, feeling utterly devastated. She was ashamed of herself for even saying such horrid things to him.She wanted to run back to Kabir, kiss away his hurt and apologise for the way she broke up with him, but she couldn’t. She felt her entire world crumble when she saw anger and disdain in Kabir’s eyes…for her. The anguish, fury and pain on Kabir’s face were going to haunt her forever.

To hell with everything. She wanted to kill Raina for making her life hell.

She sucked in big gulps of air as tears flowed from her eyes, and her throat seemed to close. She pressed her forehead, trying to ease the pain. Her nose burned, and she had difficulty breathing, but she just couldn’t stop crying.

One positive thing in all this was that she had planned everything she needed to do after she broke up with Kabir. Since Raina threatened her, she knew she had to stage the breakup with Kabir convincingly. She called Ranjeet uncle in New York and finally told him she was ready to work with him. He always insisted that she should come and stay with him and work on the US project. Even her cousin Ved wasin the US, which further solidified herdecision.

Kyra had the chance to start over after deciding to visit her uncle’s place. She explained this to her parents when she visited them at their home office. When they tried to find out the reason for her abrupt departure, she lied flat-out. She banged her head against the wall as she pondered how her conversation with her parents went.

One week ago

“Mom, Dad, I spoke to Ranjeet uncle and have decided to go to the US for some time.”

“Kyra, sweetie, this is amazing news. I am glad you’ve decided to do this.” Her Dad looked ecstatic.

“But why this sudden change of mind, dear?” Her Mom was very perceptive, as always.

“Well, you both always wanted me to see how everything works there and handle our US project. I’m ready for that responsibility now,” Kyra replied.

“But everything is running so smoothly here.” Her Mom argued.

“Vrinda, stop pulling my daughter down,” Digvijay grumbled.

“Vijay, I’m not pulling her down. How could you even say this? I’m just asking her the reason.” Vrinda snapped.

“Mom, Dad. Please. It’s nothing serious. I just feel like having a change of scenery. Is that so hard to understand?” Kyra shrugged.

“No, it’s perfect dear. I’m sure you’re going to love it in the US.” Dad smiled.

“If you’ve made up your mind, then fine, sweetie. I just want you to be happy wherever you go.” Vrinda patted her cheek.

“Thanks, Mom.”

“When do you intend to leave?”

“After a week or so, maybe.”
