“What?”

“Whatever you wanted to say. Make it interesting. Predictability bores me. You seem predictable.” My eyes widen, fingers tightening some more on my bag. Predictability bores him? And me, predictable? What the hell does that mean? I was just trying, and failing, to say thank you. “I did something unpredictable for you Ally cat. Try it for me rather than the usual.”

Fine.

After the day I’ve had, he’s getting full on irritated.

“How about you stop calling me Ally cat. I fucking hate it and it’s presumptuous.”

One brow arches at my cutting tone, as I stare at his face. Maybe it was too harsh. I don’t care. I dealt with those assholes for ages before he came along and threw his weight around, and the ones before them, and then he steamed in like some kind of saviour as if I was incapable, and now he dares to call me predictable?

I dig in my bag at the thought, ready to show him just how unpredictable I can be, and launch the notes back to the table. “And I don’t need your damned charity. Thank you, though. For dealing with those jerks.”

My body swings round with as much gumption as I’ve got given the amount of rent I just threw back at him, and I storm back towards the door. Predictable? Ha. He can stuff his predictable where the sun doesn’t shine as far as I’m concerned.

All day, every day, I deal with people putting tips down for me as if the poor people need feeding. I earn that. Am happy to damn well accept it regardless of Whit’s insistence that I don’t even need it. But this, from him? No. Maybe he’s just as much of an asshole as those other guys were. I don’t know now. Or care. I’m tired, cranky, and still need to get home and make sure dinner is on the table for my two dicks of brothers who should be able to do the job themselves by now.

Strapping my bag over my shoulder securely, I huff and head out onto the street for the subway. And then immediately hit something hard. My body rebounds off it, legs faltering until something grabs me and pulls me upright again. Potent aftershave floods my senses, as my fingers grip onto his arm. It’s only when I eventually look up that I see the guy who is holding me.

Jesus, what is it with privileged, good looking men today?

“Looking where you’re going might be useful,” he says, sharply. I shrug out of his hold, as infuriated with that remark as I am with the man I just stormed out on.

“Or maybe you should have some fucking manners and move for a woman?”

A glare descends on his face, one that instantly fills me with ten times the backbone I already had because of dick number three hundred and fifty today. I straighten and return the glare, ready to defend myself for a fucking eternity against pompous ass dicks who think they own the world.

“You have something to play with now, Gray. Leave this one alone.” My head swings round at the voice cutting in, eyes like daggers as he saunters over because he is not saving my ass again. “She’s my new interest.” Who is?

“You already have several interesting things. I doubt you need any more.”

My eyes flip back to the other guy, unsure who either of them are or why they’re talking about me like I’m not even here.

“I don’t. Yours was my last interesting thing and now she’s yours and you won’t play. When are you coming to play?”

“I think you’ll find she won’t play.”

“Really?”

“Yes, she hasn’t forgiven you for the ball and chain. But maybe this weekend.”

What the fuck are these two talking about?

Ugh. I’m done.

My feet have left them to it before I’ve even contemplated any more words. I can’t be bothered with either of them anymore, or any more of this day. I just need the subway, two changes, and home to my own space where some fucking sanity resides.

I walk swiftly down the steps, barging and banging into anyone who gets in my way. I mean, why not? It’s not like I haven’t had my ass handled several times today already, and then gone and hit a wall of muscle with my cheek just for the fun of it. Seems like it’s my day to be touched, poked and prodded. Not that either of those two did. Still - freaks. Certainly those two. Not predictable, though, I’ll give them that. Well, one of them isn’t. I don’t know about Mr wall of muscle who doesn’t get out the way for women, but the first one was hot as hell. Not that I’m thinking about that. Maybe I am. Screw it. That’s the finest thing to walk through my vision for several years.

My eyes roll, body sliding into the crowded platform. As if I’d even have a chance at something like him. His type’s way out of my league. I’m better looking at some of the guys in the bars I actually drink in when I get a chance. Honest guys. Guys who work a steady eight to eight and bring home the pay-check to keep their houses running smoothly. That man has trouble written all over him for me. And the fact is, I’ll never see him again.

Not in my part of town anyway.

Chapter 2

Malachi

“You disturbed me.”
