I can’t tell if she’s mad, confused, or what.
“Who is it?” I ask, my eyebrows knitting together.
“Didn’t say. She just asked to speak to you.”
“Well, hand it here,” I tell her.
She scoffs, rollin’ her eyes, but steps closer and hands me the phone. She folds her arms across her chest, waiting, no doubt, to grill me some more.
“This is Bull,” I say into the phone. The line is dead. I revert my gaze back to Minx. “There’s no one there.”
She shrugs her shoulders. “She must have hung up. Is she why you didn’t come home last night?”
“No, baby girl. I didn’t come home, because I needed to get away and blow off some steam,” I explain to her. Then it hits me.Athena. But why would she be callin’?
“Are you seein’ someone?” Her mouth thins.
“No, I’m not.” Though I wouldn’t mind seeing Athena again. That woman sure did take my breath away and that’s no easy task.
Minx lets her hands fall to her sides. “You would tell me if you were, right?”
“Yes, sweetheart, I would.” I pat down my cut and jeans, checking for my wallet. “Shit.”
“What’s wrong?” Minx’s eyebrows furrow together.
“It must have been the bartender callin’. I must’ve left my wallet there,” I tell her.
She cocks an eyebrow at me. I can see the wheels turning in her head. She’s not sure if she should believe me or not.
“Savannah, IpromiseI would tell you if I was seein’ someone. I got drunk and passed out at the bar, that’s it.”
“Alright, well, you better go get your wallet. You’re gonna need it,” she says with a dash of sass. “Oh and ride safe.”
“Always, darlin’.”
She turns to leave the room, this time leaving the door open. I shake my head. That girl and her attitude are the carbon copy of her mother.
I lock up my office, then check in with Ranger before heading back to Rusty’s Dive Bar to retrieve my wallet and see my goddess.
* * *
I’ve never even thought about tellin’ a woman about my wife or my kids. Let alone a woman I just fuckin’ met. But there’s somethin’ about Athena. I almost get the same kind of vibes from her as I did from Cami all those years ago.
When I got here, I found out she was the one who’d called the clubhouse. I couldn’t help but laugh when she told me she hung up, because she thought Minx was my Ol’ Lady. I get the feelin’ she doesn’t think much before she speaks. I’m okay with it, though, because it’s entertainin’ as fuck.
“I thought about mailing it to you,” she tells me, talkin’ about my wallet.
“You what?” I laugh. “Are you serious?”
She nods her head, not making eye contact with me. She can either be shy as fuck or full of ‘tude. I’m diggin’ both sides.
“I thought I caused a rift with you and your lady when I called. Now that I know it was your daughter, I feel silly,” she says.
I explain to her about Cami passing away and how I haven’t had a relationship with a woman since. I tell her I haven’t met the right woman yet and before she responds, she pulls her phone out of her pocket. Her eyes are glued to the screen and her face pales.
“Everythin’ alright?” I ask her.
Her eyes slowly come to mine. “Uh, yeah. Everything’s fine.”
