“Well, you get two more chances.Let’s see what you’ve got.”Maverick’s shoulders lift in a shrug.
He pitches two more times and Smithy misses each one.He tosses his bat on the grass and mutters something under his breath about Maverick being an anomaly.
“Oh my gosh!He did it!”Charlie’s grinning from ear to ear.
The next batter takes the plate and Maverick strikes him out too. Then the next.
“Jeez, does he want a job as a pitcher?”A man takes a seat next to me and watches Maverick. He’s shocked at how good my husband is and honestly, I don’t think there’s a single person here who thought Mav was this good.
“I'm not sure you could get him to move from Maple Springs.”I chuckle.“I'm Sydney, Maverick’s wife and Wyatt’s sister.”
“Ah, I’ve heard a lot about you.I'm Owen, I own the Pit Bulls.”
“My dad doesn’t want to play for you, but I might be interested in a few years.”Danny puffs out his chest with pride.
Emotions clog my throat. This is the first time Danny’s ever referred to Maverick as his dad and I love it.
“How old are you?”Owen narrows his eyes as he examines my son.
“I’ll be twelve soon.”
“Hmm… If you keep working really hard with your dad, there’s a very high chance of me being interested in you in a few years.”
“Really? You’re not joking?”Danny leaps out of his seat with wide eyes.
“Not joking even a little. You better listen to everything he tells you though, because that man is amazing.”Owen nods towards Maverick who just struck out another player.
“Yeah, he really is.”
“I still can’t believe you struck out Smithy four times.I'm pretty sure you just destroyed his pride.”Wyatt chuckles as he lifts a bottle of water to his lips.
“Yeah, if we lose the next game, it’s all Maverick’s fault.”Charlie smirks.
“Hey, now!Don’t be putting that on me.It’s not my fault he can’t touch my fastball.”Maverick shrugs and tugs me closer to him.
We’ve been hanging out in Charlie and Wyatt’s living room since we got home from the game. It’s well past my bedtime, but I'm enjoying spending time with both of my brothers. It’s not often I get the chance to do that so I’ll enjoy the time while I can get it.
Wes and Addi offered to have a movie night with the kids so we could have some time without them. They’ve been so sweet to us, I'm not sure how we’ll ever thank them.
“I'm just happy you dominate on the field and not on the ice.I don’t think my pride could handle it,” Jax murmurs, making us all laugh.
“I just wish we weren’t in season.I could really go for one of Maverick’s drinks.”Cody relaxes into the couch, but he keeps stretching his neck like he’s tense.
“What do you know about Maverick’s drinks?”I quirk a brow.
“Peck took us to the bar when we were visiting him,” Jax answers for him.He hands Cody an ice pack before taking his seat next to his twin.
“You don’t drink at all during the season?”Peck asks.
“Nah, we know our bodies can’t handle it.We would be too sluggish on the ice.”Cody shakes his head.
“Playing a high contact sport is no joke.I don’t know how you guys do it.Like sure I have to sprint, but not very far.You guys have to balance and skate faster than a sprint. Then you’re getting slammed into walls and people try to trip you with their sticks.During all of that, you have to try to get the puck and score before anyone can take it from you. It’s insanity.”Wyatt shakes his head.
“It sounds like Wyatt thinks you’re stronger and tougher than him.”I smirk.I love how I can tease Wyatt just as much as I tease Peck and he doesn’t get offended. He just smirks right back.
“I don’t know if I’d say that.”Wyatt rolls his eyes.
“He is much older than you, maybe it’s just the age thing. You get weaker with age,” Peck adds.
