“I’ll keep that in mind.”She settles back into her chair and watches me closely.“So, let’s talk details. What items do you want to start with and how many of each?”

“Well, what if we start with apple fritters, lemon bars, and chocolate cake.”

“Ok… Is there a reason for those three?”

“Not at all.I just liked them.”I turn my gaze to the desk, avoiding looking at Sydney.I don’t want her to see through my lie.

“Nice try, Mav.”She reaches across the desk and places her hand on my forearm.“Tell me the real reason.”

“I’d rather not.”

“Maverick!”She swats at my bicep, making me chuckle.

“I know you carry all three of those at the bakery on a daily basis.”

“So?”

“So, it will be less work for you.I know if I request one or two dozen, it wouldn’t be that much more work to whip up an extra batch.”

“I told you, you don’t need to worry about me.I can handle it all.”

“I know you said that, but someone needs to worry about you.”

Chapter 6

Sydney

He’sadorable.Idon’tknow what else to say about him.Not only is Maverick one of the most attractive men I’ve ever met, but he’s the sweetest too.

His long hair has been falling in his eyes all night. It’s taken everything in me to keep from brushing the strands away.I wanted to be able to look into his piercing blue eyes a little better. He has a thick layer of scruff on his strong jawline.

The henley he’s wearing has the top three buttons undone and I don’t miss the light dusting of dark brown hair on his chest. He’s wearing a chain necklace with a cross on it and somehow it makes him look more masculine.

“You don’t need to worry about me or my business.I’ve been running it alone for a long time.I know what I can and can't handle.”

“I didn’t mean-”

“I know you didn’t.I just don’t want you picking something you didn’t like just because you believe it will make my life easier.”

“You didn’t bring a single thing I didn’t like.Honestly, Syd, every pairing you came up with was absolutely perfect.I appreciate everything you’ve done today. You went above and beyond.I don’t know how I can thank you.”

“You’re welcome. No thanks are needed.”She waves me off.“I'm happy to help.”

“What do you think if we start with a dozen desserts a day?I can let you know how it goes and we can adjust the numbers if we need to.No matter what, I won't go below a dozen a day.”

“And what if you only sell three a day?”I smirk, loving how adorable he is tonight.I lean on the desk, bringing myself closer to him.

“Well, I’ll still pay for twelve.”He mirrors my position with his elbows on the desk and leaning in.

“What will you do with the rest?”

“I’ll eat them.”

“You’ll need to work out more,” I point out, earning myself a chuckle.

“And why’s that?”

“Well, if you eat nine desserts a day, you’ll definitely need to work out more if you don’t want to lose the body you have.”
