Never mind the fact that she was stunning. Her wavy, honey-colored hair that was perfect for running my fingers through, those caramel eyes with flecks of green that I swore saw straight through me, and curves I wanted to run my hands over.
There was no denying I was attracted to her, but attraction only went so far. There needed to be a connection, a spark, chemistry, something. And even in that brief time of taking photos, I felt all of it. She could deny it if she wanted, but I knew she felt it, too.It was in those small smiles, the way her fingers lingered a moment too long on my skin, and how she blushed when she was in my arms.
I stared at my phone where it sat face down on my kitchen counter, resisting the urge to check it again. I finally caved a few minutes later. As usual, the screen only showed the picture of Luna wearing a pumpkin costume. My lips spread into a small smile.
I gave a little whistle and Luna, my golden retriever, bounded over to me, tongue lolling out of her mouth. Her tail wagged a happy beat as I petted her head and scratched her ears.
Was Elsie a dog person? I hoped so.
Whoa. Where did that thought come from? Slow down there, Jameson.
I sighed, turning my phone back over right as it vibrated in my hand. My heart jumped into my throat and promptly plummeted to my feet as I saw Maya’s name on the screen instead of Elsie’s.
MAYA
Hey Jam-Jam. Any word from our girl?
ME
OUR girl?

Elsie is amazing, but sometimes she needs a nudge for her to get over her fears so...
ME
*Sigh* what meddling are you going to attempt this time?

And you’re telling me this because?
MAYA
Did you know they have cold brew?
I know it’s your favorite.
ME
Are you trying to bribe me into showing up there?
Shouldn’t you be paying attention to your friend?
MAYA
