The liquid sloshes inside the cup, and she waves it. “Something purple.” Her arm shoots out toward me. “Here. Try.”
I accept the plastic cup and take a sip. It’s not bad, tropical, so I keep it.
A few other girls I know make their way over, and we stand drinking and chatting before a girl, whose name I’ve never bothered to remember, stumbles over, hysterically laughing.
“You guys. You have to see this video I just took.”
She holds up her phone, facing the screen our way. Some girls are dancing super provocatively in the foreground before they start to kiss, but I’m not looking. It’s what’s in the background that has my eyes.
Liam with a girl on his lap, laughing and high-fiving Grey. He smacks her ass as she stands. My brows draw together, having seen enough. I push through the group, ignoring my name called, and walk through the crowd to where the guys are holding court.
Grey and Kai are sitting, drinking, surrounded by girls, but Liam’s a no-show, and neither is an electric blue mini dress.
“Where’s Liam?”
They look at each other and laugh before Grey offers, “Becoming a legend.”
“What does that mean?”
Kai stands up and pushes me backward, confusion marring his brow. His lips grace my ear to speak over the music, “It means he’s about to break Grey’s record for the number of virgins slept with.”
I feel numb, like everything moving in slow motion. The music fades, and everything goes silent as I close my eyes.
That’s why he asked. It was a game. A means to a victory. All of it, bullshit. God, I must have seemed so pathetic, such an easy target. The pathetic puppy that follows Liam around.
My palms lift to Kai’s chest, my perfected smile leading the way.
“God, he’s so gross, but it’s not unexpected. That’s not why I was asking, though.”
Kai grins as I continue, “I was hoping he’d keep Grey company so we could slip away.”
His grin grows as he nods. “Yeah. Okay.”
“But do me a favor. Don’t tell Grey—I don’t want his opinion about anything. Just wait like fifteen minutes and tell him you’re coming to find me because I disappeared. ‘Kay?”
He takes a drink from his cup. “Whatever you want, gorgeous.”
“Atrium. Fifteen minutes.”
I give a small wave and walk backward before turning around, walking out. The girl I just became is permanent and almost unrecognizable to the one with a broken heart.
Liam
The girl under me wraps her legs around my back, running her hands up the side of my body.
What the fuck am I fucking doing?
“I can’t do this,” I rush out, tapping her legs to unhook.
The moment she does, I stand from the bed.
She sits up, pulling the sheet over her chest. “What do you mean you can’t do this?”
I shove a foot into my jeans. “I mean, put your clothes on. We’re done here.”
“You’re supposed to take my virginity.”
I stare at her, pausing my redress. “Are you fucking serious—trust me, in a few years, you’ll be glad it didn’t happen.”
