“Good ’cause you haven’t been home five minutes, yet haven’t touched the court yet. Pussy needs to be the last thing on your mind.”
I grinned. “Wasn’t you trying to hand me some a couple days ago?”
My brother shrugged. “That type of pussy doesn’t come with any commitments. Ol’ girl that had you grinning at your damn phone does. Whether it’s your dick or your pockets she’s chasing doesn’t matter. You have work to do.”
“Nigga, I’m grown as fuck. You’re not about to tell me what I can do with my money or my dick.”
He chuckled and nodded. “You got that. Have you found a place yet?”
“What makes you think I’m not gonna be here with you?”
Yoel tilted his face toward the sky again, speaking through a cloud of smoke. “This isn’t where you need to be. These niggas can’t respect that things are different in your world.”
“Ain’t shit about me changed, Yoel.” I frowned hard and he nodded, expelling another round of smoke.
“It’s not about you, it’s about what you have to lose and what these muthafuckers don’t. This is always gonna be home but you have bigger shit to do, Kove. They know where your heart is, they know where your loyalty lies. Nobody will ever judge you for getting the fuck up outta here, and if they do…” he smiled arrogantly made a gun motion with his fingers and pointed toward the one in front of him, “I’ll handle that shit.”
I smirked, shaking my head and slouching in the chair a little more. D-Ville was my hood. DP was my family. Both would always be a reflection of who I was but I also understood that my world was different now. I knew who the hell I was and would always stay true to that but being on the other side meant changes I wasn’t sure I was ready for.
I thought about the long ass list of responsibilities Sovoya had me committed to. The image they needed in order for me to be accepted. The people I would have to be connected to in order to be considered a Royal.
I dropped my head back. “I can’t be out here on no fraud shit. They don’t want me, they want who they can turn me into. Suits and shit. Smiling for the gotdamn cameras and pretending to be interested in women who wouldn’t know what to do with me or my dick.”
“You don’t want that shit, let me know, I’ll take your spot.”
“Nigga, you can’t ball, and I didn’t say I didn’t want it. I just don’t like what’s attached to it.”
He chuckled and shrugged. “Then shut yo’ ass up.”
I grinned and we got quiet before he added, “You gonna always be you, Kove. This shit is in your blood.” His fingerscircled in the air, signaling. He meant our home, our life, our world. “D-Ville raised you. I put that ball in your hands because I wanted you off the streets. Ikeptthat ball in your hands because it gave you something I couldn’t.”
I turned my head in his direction right before he added, “A way out.”
I leaned forward, reaching across the table for the blunt. As soon as it was pinched between my fingers, I inhaled and grinned, speaking through the smoke. “You’re out here sounding like a muthafuckin’ afterschool special.”
Yoel chuckled. “I’m educated, nigga. I know some shit.”
He stood from the chair he was in and lifted the gun, carrying it back to the shed and returning empty handed. “I’ve got some shit to handle. You riding?”
I tossed my chin, feeling my high settling in. “Yeah, I can do that.”
Two fucking days. That was how long Xiah had my ass on ice. That would be ending today. I spent Saturday chilling with Yoel. Sunday morning I drove back to Crescent Falls and spent my day lounging in my suite and ordering room service.
Yoel had me burning trees from the time I pulled up on him until I crashed at two that morning, which meant I spent the day high as a fucking kite. That was part of the reason I’d hit Xiah’s line twice. Both calls went to voicemail and the text I sent when she didn’t answer was still sitting on read with no response.
The shit pissed me off because I didn’t chase women. The most they could get from me was chasing a nut while I dug in their pussies before sending them on their way. However, thiswas the type of shit I was on with Xiah… a gotdamn chase. The proof was in the appointment I set to view a property she was listed on as the selling agent. As soon as I was done with practice, I would be driving out to Crescent Pointe to pull up on Xiah because she refused to answer my texts or calls.
What made things worse was it didn’t have a damn thing to do with the memories of her lips spread wide while my dick glided between them or the vise grip she had on my shit while I made her cum back to back. I just wanted to be around her pretty ass. To see that damn smile cave her cheeks in and to hear her soft ass voice telling me to stop when I said some shit that made her blush.
I parked my car at the arena, feeling annoyed that I had to spend the next couple hours with the Royals training staff. In the locker room there was a player liaison waiting for me. Some young ass intern who kept telling me shit I wouldn’t remember while he gave me a tour of the arena.
That shit was nice. They had lounges for every ticket level, even the general seats, but the higher the price line, the more privileges were attached. Our last stop was the players’ facility, which was under the Lafayette Grand Isles Center.
I thought the arena was crazy but this shit was nice as hell. Practice courts, locker rooms, weight rooms, film rooms. The coaches’ offices were above the courts with glass walls that gave them visual access to the practice courts. The GM’s office was there too, which was interesting. I guess she was on her shit and decided she was just as much a part of this team as the coaches. From the one conversation I had with her, I wasn’t surprised that she was right in the middle of things.
Genesis Whitaker loved this team. She supported the players and coaches and made me appreciate that the Royals were a family. Wearing this jersey would be deeper than just collecting a paycheck.
“What you think?” Coach Bryant was waiting for me as soon as I stepped onto the court. His expression was neutral like he wanted to see my reaction before he gave me his.
