Chapter 17
Carlos hung up the phone and scrubbed a hand down his face. He’d reached out to the allies he’d built up north and received promises of help if it came down to it. He’d worked hard for those allies as he built his small prowl and having the added weight of a larger one had made their conversation infinitely easier than it used to be. Before, they were smaller, certainly no threat to anyone. Now with the two prowls blended, the panthers on both sides strong, they could easily become a force to be reckoned with.
He’d talked with Brianne as Savannah had suggested and got the name of the local allies the prowl had built. They would have the backup they needed if it came to that, though, Brianne had given him strong words about looking to allies.
He smiled.
That Savannah came from women so strong made him happy, his mate would have no problem with the aggressiveness of his cat. He’d worried for years that he would have a hard time finding a mate. He knew it would take a strong woman to handle his cat, but strong women did not tend to be submissive, and his cat demanded it. What alpha female would allow him to dominate her, Felix of a prowl or not? He had no desire to fight with a mate for dominance every night in their bed.
It made everything about Savannah stand out in sharp contrast. He knew she would be strong enough, yet, her being latent would make her soft in places that would soothe his cat. Already with their tentative bond in place she settled him. Just being in her presence calmed his cat, and relaxed his body. He couldn’t wait to complete the bond.
He looked up as power entered the floor. The ding of the elevator sounded on the quiet floor a moment later. He lifted his nose and inhaled, relaxing as he recognized the scent. Whistles rang out as the former Alpha announced himself and his mate. Jeremiah and Harper knocked and walked into his office. He waved them into the chairs in front of his desk. Curiosity must’ve beckoned Derrick from his office down the hall, because his Beta stood at the doorway. He rested his shoulder on the jamb and crossed his arms over his chest.
“We felt the beginnings of the bond flow down the prowl link.” Jeremiah commented, crossing his leg over his knee.
Harper nodded and looked between him and Derrick. “She won’t be an easy win.”
Carlos grunted. “An understatement.”
Her grandfathers both laughed. Jeremiah was serious a moment later. “That’s part of the reason we’re here. You should know, my sister is the reason Savi left the prowl.”
Harper sighed next to him.
“I kicked Antoinette out of the prowl years ago. She was our old seer.”
Carlos sat back in his chair and put his hands behind his head. “What happened?”
“She’d been giving out false prophecies.”
Harper scoffed. “She was using the apprentices under her. Claiming their prophecies as her own. With a twist of course.”
His panther stirred. He already was wary of using a seer. “This new Seer?”
“I’m embarrassed to say, I didn’t notice what my sister was doing. Joelle is how we found out. We haven’t had any issues with her since she’s taken over.” Jeremiah scratched his hair.
“In our defense, Antoinette used just enough of the truth to make her prophecies come true to a certain degree.” Harper added.
“How does it affect Savannah?” He leaned forward.
The two elders looked at each other before turning to him. Jeremiah spoke. “We didn’t get the exact story. Joelle wasn’t sure what Antoinette told Savi.” Jeremiah sighed. “My sister wouldn’t tell us, and there were no means I could stomach to get her to tell us.”
Harper gripped his co-mate’s shoulder.
“Something she said to my granddaughter ran her off. Antoinette disappeared once we banished her, and Joelle said it didn’t matter what her exact words were, but that if we pushed Savi, she would be locked into the false prophecy. She said eventually Savannah would come back to the prowl as she was supposed to. When Jamie was born, she started working for the cub’s place in the prowl and I thought she’d finally come around which gave me more faith in Joelle’s vision.”
Carlos cursed and turned his chair. He pulled his panther under control and faced the men. “So you still don’t know what Savannah’s hang up is?”
“Other seers wanted to go to Savannah and read her, to maybe mitigate the damage, but I—”
“We.” Harper interjected.
Jeremiah nodded. “We didn’t think it was a good idea. She was so young. We instead tried other ways to guide her back into the prowl.”
“She wouldn’t have trusted anything a new Seer had to say anyway.” Carlos murmured.
Harper nodded. “Exactly. You already know her.”
He nodded. What he knew of his mate, he knew she wouldn’t have wanted to hear from another seer. “So it was something about her place in the prowl?”
