He exhaled roughly. “Do you really even need it?”

 “Of course.”

“Why? Are you planning on paying for phone sex or something?” he grumbled.

I stamped down my irritation. “I’m a grown man. I’d like to have my wallet. Is that okay with you?”

He rolled his eyes. “Fine. Tomorrow I’ll take you by to grab it. But I’m staying in the car. I don’t need any more crazy solar eclipse omega talk from your mom.”

“You should listen to her. She knows a lot about all the different wolves. She actually cherishes our history.” A lot of the younger wolves brushed off the old lore. But older wolves knew that our history affected our future. “Maybe you have super powers and you don’t even know it.”

 “I’m staying in the car.”

“Perhaps during a full moon you can fly.” I smirked.

“You really amuse yourself, don’t you? I’m staying in the car.”

“Suit yourself.”Stubborn punk. “But she’ll think you’re weird.”

“If I cared about that, I wouldn’t be seen in public with you.”

 “Very funny.”

We went through the store and piled the cart with meats and cheeses. He mentioned he liked pasta, so I got the ingredients to make spaghetti with meat sauce one night and a few other dishes.

As we traversed the aisles, it reminded me of when I’d been in a relationship with my ex, Sheena. She’d always forced me to do little domestic things like grocery shop with her. It had always been torture shopping with her because of the way she meandered through the store, picking things up randomly and having to backtrack constantly. Blade shopped like I would shop. He went at the chore like he was on a mission. He was very precise and didn’t leave an aisle until he was sure we didn’t want anything from that spot.

At least there’s one thing I like about the guy.

We were on the chip aisle when a blonde girl in a tight pink dress walked by us. She’d checked Blade out as she passed, but then she stopped suddenly. “Blade?” Her voice was soft.

 “Heather?”

Her eyes widened. “Oh, my God. I thought that was you.” She moved toward him and he stiffened, placing his hand over his concealed gun. But when she hugged him, he allowed it.

He gave an uneasy laugh. “How long has it been?”

“Six months at least.” Her curious gaze shifted to me. “Hi, I’m Heather.”

 I nodded. “Wyatt.”

Her gaze was accessing. “Are you two friends?” Her voice went up at the end, as if she didn’t think we were.

Oddly enough, her doubting expression and tone annoyed me. Why couldn’t Blade and I be friends? I mean, weweren’t. But maybe in another universe we could have been. Perhaps if we hadn’t both been in the same business and had to compete with each other for jobs we’d have been buddies.

Blade ran his hand over the back of his neck, as if searching for a way to describe our relationship. A wicked idea popped in my head and, without really thinking things through, I slipped my arm loosely around his shoulders. He went rigid, but he didn’t move away. I had to admire his self-control and how he was trying to figure out what I was up to, rather than just pushing me away and yelling at me.

“What do you say, babe? Are we just friends?” I smiled into his blue eyes, and his mouth became a grim line. I had no idea what the fuck I was even doing. I was just so used to screwing with him, it had seemed like a funny idea when it first came to me. Now I was rethinking things as I stood with my arm around a man who looked like he was going to murder me the second he had me alone.

She widened her eyes again. “Oh. I… I didn’t realize you were bisexual, Blade.” She laughed awkwardly. “Sorry.”

His muscles trembled under my arm, and I knew he wanted to shove me away and clear up the misunderstanding. But he didn’t. He just shrugged and slipped his arm around my waist in what was most likely retaliation. “There’s nothing better than anal.”

“Oh, is that right?” She laughed weakly.

My face flushed with heat. Yes, I’d started it, but he’d taken it and run, making it twice as uncomfortable. I’d wanted to embarrass him, like I always did, but this had backfired big-time. A couple of people walked by and they smiled at us and gave a thumbs-up.

I pulled my arm away with a jagged laugh. “We’re just kidding.” I held out my hand, keeping it level. “I’m straight as an arrow.”
