She squinted at me. “Why?”
“I’m just supposed to grab my wallet and go.” I grinned. “But no way I’m coming all this way and not having a small visit.” I hugged her, squeezing her bony shoulders. It worried me sometimes when every year she seemed to shrink. “Got any more of that pie left?”
She laughed. “Of course. Plus I made a blueberry pie this morning.”
“Why are you making so many pies lately?” I sat at her kitchen table, my mouth watering as she carried the baked goods over.
“Joe next door dropped off a ton of fruit from his trees, and I don’t know what else to do with it.” She shook her head as she sliced into the flaky pastry. “I gave a pie to the mailman already. You want to take some home with you?”
“Sure.” I nodded.
She placed a slice on a pink china plate and slid it to me. She licked her finger as she watched me. She sat and leaned back in her chair with a funny expression. “So why is Blade so standoffish today?”
My face warmed and I had trouble swallowing my pie. My mom wasn’t one for beating around the bush. I shrugged. “He’s never what you would call sociable.”
There was a heavy silence, and then she said, “Something happened, didn’t it?” Her gaze was shrewd.
I squirmed in my chair and tried to ignore her piercing eyes by staring at my plate. But eventually I had to look up, and her expression was grim. “I know you’re my mom and everything, but don’t you think you’re being kind of nosy?”
“There was something going on between you two the other day.”
I set my fork down carefully. “Nah.”
“Don’t lie to me, son.”
Heat intensified in my cheeks. “Nothing conscious.”
She seemed to consider her words before speaking. “You need to be careful with him.”
I cocked my head. “Meaning what?”
She gave a stiff laugh and stood, moving to the sink. She rinsed a few glasses as she stared out the window into the next-door neighbor’s yard. “Solar eclipse omegas aren’t like typical omegas.”
“I know, you said that last time we were here. But you didn’t really give any details.” She was making me uneasy with her cryptic statements.
“I probably should have, but I wanted to be sure I was right before I said anything definitive to either of you. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a solar eclipse omega.”
“You’re kind of freaking me out.” I laughed. “Is he going to kill me in my sleep or something?”
“Well, I hope not.”
“Mom, come on.” I widened my eyes.
She turned to face me and leaned against the sink with her arms folded. “I called one of the Ancients after you two left the other day.” She hesitated. “He confirmed what I remembered.”
“Which is?” I nudged.
She grimaced. “You may not believe me.”
“Okay.” I laughed uneasily and stood. “This mysterious thing has gone on long enough. You don’t get to just keep alluding to deep dark secrets. Talk.”
“First let me ask you something.”
“Shoot.”
“Are you attracted to him?”
The memory of fucking last night rushed me, and I dropped my gaze, feeling embarrassed. I didn’t love the idea of talking about my sex life with my mom to begin with, but this was a whole other level of weird. “For some reason we’re attracted to each other.” I winced. “I mean, we were. I’m hoping it’s done now.”
