She pressed her hand to her chest. “Meaning what?”

I pushed my piece of pie away, feeling too anxious to eat. “I’ve never been into guys.”

Narrowing her gaze, she stayed quiet.

“And I have always disliked Blade.”

“Oh, boy.” She moved to the table, and she sat quickly, as if her legs were weak.

“What?” Her rattled demeanor was making me uneasy.

“I’m not sure I like where this is going.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re talking in past tense. I was right. Something changed between you two, didn’t it?”

I grudgingly nodded.

She took a steadying breath. “Solar eclipse omegas are an anomaly. Only ten are born every generation, making them extremely rare.”

“Okay.”

“It’s believed they were created to protect our species’ survival.” She met my gaze hesitantly. “A hundred years ago, there was a problem with the females of our kind. Only one out of every hundred births resulted in a live cub.”

“Shit.” I scowled. “Why?”

“We’ve never known what caused it. It might have been a virus of some sort that spread rapidly. But it only affected the females.”

“That’s horrible.”

“It was a time of great stress. That’s why when the first solar omega was born, the Ancients knew their prayer for a miracle had been granted.”

“I guess I’m just not following.”

She sighed. “No. You wouldn’t without me explaining further.” She leaned toward me. “The solar eclipse omegas were able to bypass the sickness that had attacked our females.”

“How?” I squinted at her.

She bit her lower lip, and then she continued. “They can have babies.”

I bugged my eyes and shook my head in disbelief. “What? No. That’s not possible.”

“I know it sounds impossible. But it’s true.”

I stared at her feeling completely confused and freaked-out. I knew she wasn’t telling me this for no reason.

“It’s hard to comprehend, but it’s the truth, son. I swear it.”

I frowned. “But how would that even work?”

“It’s complicated.” She clenched her jaw as if she had to do something unpleasant, and then she said, “This is why I asked what happened between you two. I can see clearly on your face thatsomethinghas occurred, so you needn’t try to hide the truth.”

I dropped my gaze to my white knuckles. “I don’t even know how to begin.”

“Tell me.”

I swallowed hard. “We—” I gave a hard laugh. “I can’t even say it out loud.”
