She winced. “Oh. Yes, I did forget that.” She glanced at her son. “But you have no excuse. I told you plenty of lore.”

He sighed. “To be honest, I wouldn’t abort the baby if it was up to me.”

I looked up at him in surprise. “What?”

His cheeks were pink, and he looked embarrassed. “I would keep the child.”

“Why?” Even I could hear how bewildered I sounded.

He pulled his hand from my shoulder and shrugged. “I told you, I’m old enough that carrying on my bloodline is something I think about.”

I dropped my gaze to the table and didn’t say anything. I felt weird now that I knew he didn’t support my decision to get rid of the pregnancy. It was his too. I’d assumed he’d want to terminate the baby because when I’d suggested it he hadn’t argued.

He put his hand back on my shoulder and squeezed. “But it’s your body. You’re the one who has to sacrifice everything to carry this child to term.”

“It’s a sacrifice well worth doing,” his mom growled.

I pinched the skin between my eyes. “Jesus. I can’t believe this is happening.” I knew I sounded like a broken record, but every now and then the sheer insanity of the situation hit me all over again.

Her gaze softened somewhat. “Look. If you don’t want to raise the child, we can work around that.” She sighed. “But please don’t do anything stupid that would harm this baby. Carry it to term, and then I’ll raise it with Wyatt.” She grimaced. “It’s not just the Ancients that are the problem, Blade. This is my grandchild.” Her voice shook on the last word, and it sent a stab of guilt through me.

Wyatt moved and he leaned against the sink. “I hadn’t really thought about that.”

I tilted my head back and exhaled. “How am I supposed to go about my daily life if…?” I shook my head. “If I’m pregnant? People will obviously notice. This isn’t just something I can hide under big shirts.”

She chewed her lower lip. “I might have a solution for that little problem.”

“Really?” I asked suspiciously.

“There’s a compound in the mountains to the north. Other solar eclipse omegas have gone there during their pregnancies.”

“Is it a hospital?” I rubbed my chin.

“There is a medical facility on the grounds. But it’s a small community made up of solar eclipse omegas and their families.”

“Why would we go there?” Wyatt asked.

“It’s a way for the males to hide what’s happening to their bodies, and they can give birth there with doctors trained to deliver male omega babies. If they decide to keep the baby, then they return home and make up whatever story they need to about adopting or anything they come up with. But if they just want to birth the baby and then give it up, they leave the baby there and return to their old life as if nothing happened. There are those at the compound that will raise the child happily. In this case, of course, Wyatt and I would want the baby.”

I pressed my stomach and fought off the depression that wanted to settle on me. Was my life ruined now? How would I go through something like this and then return to my old life as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened? “How long is the gestation period?” I asked in a hushed voice.

“Three months.” His mother pressed her lips together. “It’s much shorter than in humans.”

“Thank God for that.” How was I going to get that much time off work without having to answer lots of questions? “What about my job?” I scowled. “I love my job. I can’t disappear for three months and keep it.”

“Do you have any vacation time?” Wyatt asked.

“Not three months’ worth.”

“During the male pregnancy you really will only show in the last month.” She scanned my body. “During the final four weeks your body will change dramatically.”

“I guess I might be able to get four weeks off.” Darcy might go for it if I groveled enough.

“Well, if you want to hide the pregnancy, then you will need to go away. As I said, your body will drastically transform the last month.”

“Please tell me I’m not going to get big boobs.” I cringed and ran a hand over my flat pecs.

“No. Males do not lactate or breastfeed.”
